Every time I see him in a movie his acting is so bad that I think he should have stayed in the gay-for-pay stripper business, maybe do some porn.
Chunnel Tutor* is pretty good in comedies, like 21 & 22 Jump Street, or unintentional comedies like Jupiter Ascending, which is so earnest in its batshit insanity that it's hilarious, but he's just too goofy looking when he's playing serious roles
And maybe a third reason: the visual effects look much more artificial than in the original. Yeah, they are bigger, and they are more complex with lots of fluid and procedural simulations, but to me personally, the effects from the 90s look better.
The original was heavy on practical effects and models with CGI used sparingly to enhance the scene rather than dominate it. I'm not sure if they did the same with this film or if it's mostly CGI (probably CGI since it's more budget friendly)), but that could explain the difference in things appearing more artificial.
