Independence 2 and 3

There was still a lot to clean up, and considering how many ships were floating around the planet, it's unlikely that the other ragtag military forces were able to take them all out before they got their shields operating again. Especially since the tactic relied on them using their main weapon, which wasn't a guarantee.

But now, courtesy of the ships they were able to take down, and a basic understanding of how those ships and technology work, they could put together a more tangible attack force of their own using salvaged fighters and weaponry in order to fight fire with fire.

There's also the possibility of other aliens out there, too. Maybe a gypsy-like band of refugees from the myriad other worlds the locusts have fed upon who follow behind them and try to scavenge what they can from the leftovers. Or hell, maybe they've put together a military force of their own in order to exact revenge, and when they discover that Earth has not only managed to successively fight back on their own, but deal a crippling blow, anything's possible.

There's a lot of ways to go. Some cheesy, some not.

The aliens are dead, that was the whole fleet.

Agreed. The alien speaking 'through' Dr. Okun said as much. It was their whole civilization inside the mothership. When it went boom, so did they.

I suppose there could have been survivors in the city-destroyers that crashed to Earth at the end, though. Isn't there a novel where this exact thing happens?

But it's been 15-16 years before these movies will be realized, the aliens have been living on Earth for that long?

Why not? They have access to advanced technologies and science, their armor, weapons and ships are extremely powerful, and all they're really missing as of Independence Day is their mothership and one sister ship. We have no idea how successful the rest of the campaign was, but we do know that their only viable tactic at the time was relying on the aliens to use their primary weapon while their shields were down. And Goldblum's character made it abundantly clear that the window in which the shields would be down wouldn't last forever.

Now, without a mothership, the aliens have a whole new priority, too. The two movies could revolve around mankind working together to stop them from building a new one, for instance. And that, alone, could be pretty damn epic since -- at absolute best -- they can only match the alien's technology using inferior knowledge, training and understanding thereof.

The rumor was, a long time ago, that a sequel would focus on some of the aliens surviving the crash of their ships and going after the humans for payback. That rumor of course became the novel, but I could see them doing something like that.

Who ever said that it had to take place years later?

Since it has Will Smith signed up for it, obviously aged 16 years since his appearance in the first film, it makes sense that it would be set years later as well. They could, of course, go another direction, but I don't expect the studio to be making a period piece.

God.

Everyone is is 15 year older NOW than they were when they filmed the first one. If these happen they will at least need to take place several years later because otherwise everyone looknig old will be too stupid to ignore.

However Roland ignore all science in his fiction story that made little sense called 2012 so I wouldn't put it past him.

movies are made to suspend belief... I believe I can suspend my belief about the movie long enough to think it's a few years later or months later, whatever needs be, instead of 16-20 years later....
I got a better imagination then that.
