I'm So Sick Of The Secrecy...

AudioBridge said:
On topic, don't you think it would only help to have more engaged marketing for this film start about now? They've been good about engaging the fans online, so now how about some online mini-documentaries, cast/crew interviews, etc?
We just aren't going to agree on this, because I'm willing to accept Abrams' desire for secrecy and you aren't. It's 10+ months until the film opens, and between now and then there will be more interviews with the cast -- even if they're promoting other movies (Cho, for one, has Harold & Kumar Go to Guantanamo coming out this summer), the discussion will inevitably turn to Star Trek. There will inevitably be set photos and publicity photos, and a trailer that gives us an inkling of what the plot will be about.

But until then, it's a long way from here to Christmas, and there's a lot of other movies that will be coming out between now and then, so it's not like you're going to "starve" while waiting for your Star Trek "meal," unless you really have no plans to "eat" until December.

See, I completely accept his desire for secrecy. It's his film! But I don't have to like it :D

Star Trek released a trailer last month, and has already released two teaser posters
Those posters told us nohting other than the movie would involve the original series, and the trailer was just a teaser with some dimly lit shots of the the "new" Enterprise. Hardly a meaty bite.

FWIW, J.J. and company are promising stuff such as a full picture of the Enterprise "Very Soon" or at least were saying so around the time of the TrekMovie Q&A I think.

You also accept that he can use time travel in his story, but you don't have to like that either. So in other words, this is less about the movie and more about you being hurt J.J. didn't consult you first? ;)

Exactly!

I didn't suggest they were. You were discussing Indiana Jones' marketing strategy in the context of releasing information to whet the audience's appetite without spoiling the film. That's exactly what the Star Trek crew was doing when they released the posters and the trailer.

We still haven't gotten anything terribly meaty out of Indiana Jones either. We certainly hadn't gotten anything meaty about it last July, when it was 10 months away from release.

Maybe you can start a petition. Trekkies Against Time Travel. ;)

He wants something substantial to hate. He's already convinced he won't like this movie, he just wants Abrams to fill in the blanks for him.
You must be some kind of jerk, Biggles. If you'd read my posts, you would have seen I'm excited about the film. I'm unhappy about the underlying plot device, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt in other areas. I'm not looking for anything to hate, but I could start with you, bigglebrain.

Ten months left to showtime? Then how about one teaser image or a 2 minute behind the scenes vignette each month? They might already be planning this, but that doesn't mean its unreasonable to suggest it to them.

AudioBridge, I want you to knock off these sort of remarks immediately. Calling another poster a 'jerk' is considered flaming on this board, and making fun of their username is considered trolling.

Next time you do it, you'll be in line for a warning.

Thanks.

Sorry. Technically, I have already knocked it off, but message received :)

You know, I think this is the first time I've ever been in trouble around here. Kinda proud :D

The film doesn't come out for almost a year. We've already had a teaser trailer and a viral site. In the past couple of years, Abrams and Co. have been VERY open about talking with sites and fans about what direction they intend to take the film, and what elements may be included. We know most of the cast, and have heard assorted, potentially legit rumors about the plot. The merchandise is already being presented at a major convention. The crew had discussed the film at both of the last two Comic-Cons. Compared to most other films at this stage of their development, we've been given a hell of a lot so far, and I'd argue that the the current secrecy on the set is understandable considering the up-hill battle Abrams has protecting the film's bigger surprises from us curious fans. On the other hand, I'm actually dreading this movie, so the less we know, the less I have to bitch about. ;)

Speaking of merchandise and secrecy, Trekmovie.com has an article on merchandising for the movie which contains this tidbit - a description of the communicators in the film:

...reportedly resembles a black flip phone with a video screen inside and the Starfleet Logo emblazoned on the top...

Video communicators are decades overdue in "Star Trek" (Hell, a variation of the idea appears in "Forbidden Planet" back in the 1950s). It's hard to imagine how the producers could "freshen TOS up" without including something like this.

Well, in a sense, after The Cage Starfleet went backwards as in the cage all stations (and even the Transporter) had those small TV montor screens on the adjustable telescoping arms. They dissapeared from the set from Where No Man Has Gone Before onward. ;)

Didn't they just release that "Under Construction" teaser/trailer a couple of weeks ago? We get an interview with someone connected to the production like every three days. What's the big deal?

Now I wonder since the movie's been pushed back to summer of 2009 if we'll be getting the next trailer much later too.

Well, it's been announced the release has been delayed until May 2009. Now that they're going to make us wait another four months surely they'll soon throw the fans more of a bone than they have so far.

I love all the secrecy. Trek fans don't need to know every little thing as it happens. The idea is to go into the movie knowing as little as possible. No preconceptions. Judge the movie after you've seen it, not on some stolen copy of the script you've seen before hand.

On the contrary, it means whatever bits of information Abrams was going to let us know will now have to be rationed out even more carefully.

I love all the people in the Star Trek XI forum posting about how much they love the secrecy and lack of spoilers while reading every single tidbit that has come their way.
