I did watch Game of Thrones before seeing Discovery. I say this as a fan of Discovery. But, I consider GoT to be a mature serialized TV show done correctly. Discovery is still learning how to do this. Don't get me wrong. Discovery is very good.

But, GoT has thoroughly mastered managing many ongoing plot threads over an extended time. It's mastered using gore, swearing, nudity, etc (all the MA stuff) in a way that actually contributes to the feel of the show. That stuff exists in reality and GoT uses it to make its world feel more realistic. For the most part, all the characters are fantastic. And, GoT doesn't constrain itself to 42 minute stories. Episodes vary in length to produce maximum enjoyment for each episode. In other words, GoT isn't editing for time.

On the other hand, Discovery has not mastered all of those things. Although, I think it does a good job at most of those. I just wouldn't say they've mastered all of them. A particular recent peeve was how they edited an episode "for time" even though it's a frigging streaming service.

I'm a huge ST fan in general and Discovery specifically. But I have to give the edge to GoT over Discovery at this point. Of course, we're comparing one season of Discovery to many seasons of GoT. However, I'd say at this point in GoT, they created a much more immersive world that felt real and unique.

Yes I do - I also have watched and enjoyed The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood - The Expanse, all shows that I personally feel are far superior to GOT and are all serialised! Not really seeing the correlation between Disc and GOT tbh...

Doesn't Peak TV actually describe the fact that there are too many high quality TV productions out there?

It's not really a statement of quality for an individual series. (Like not peak as defined as 'top', but peak as in peak oil or peak production)

Everyone watches game of thrones.
Weeelll, almost. In my case.

I've watched the first season and some of the second. It's O.K., but I stopped watching as it's nowhere near as good as the books and as I expected the last two books to be out by now, I didn't want to 'spoil' them.

Yeah, foolish wasn't I ? Mind you, I've got the Blurays so I can catch up if I decide to.

I don't watch GoT, although I'm told I should watch it because blah blah, politics, characters, plot twists, storytelling, you know... the usual. I just can not for the life of me get emotionally invested in fantasy. I can't nerd out about fantasy unless it has a science fiction backdrop like Star Wars. I like the idea of GoT, and would definitely be on board a GoT style sci-fi series. I was hoping that Discovery was going to be Star Trek's answer to GoT from the initial information, but Discovery doesn't seem to be as well put-together as GoT (based on what people say about it)

But that doesn't stop me from loving Discovery one bit! Discovery feels like a show put together by people that want grown-up serialized drama for Star Trek, but don't have the storytelling experience quite yet. Honestly, I'd love that for Star Trek as well, but some of the best parts of Discovery this season were when it stopped trying to be 'edgy/modern' Star Trek and just being Star Trek.

Fuck no, I don't watch Game of Thrones. I don't find rape, incest and general abuse of women (and glorification of such) particularly entertaining, as it goes. And if I want to see people get their kit off every 5 seconds, I'll watch some porn. There's no need for it in a mainstream television drama, thanks.

I find it hard to believe that there are people in this world who are not watching GoT
What? People exist in the world who have different preferences from you? But how can this BE?

What really irritates me is the reaction of most fans of the show when I say I don't like it.
"But have you SEEN it?" Yes. That's how I know I don't like it.
Roll their eyes when I mention about the rape stuff.
I've been called a feminist like it's a dirty word when I mention I don't like the treatment of women on the show.
Act like I'm weird for not liking their precious TV show. Dude, you're the one that likes watching a guy bone his sister.

I'm very much enjoying Discovery though.

I've never seen it to judge but if it does exploit those themes for entertainment then I can save my money and sensibilities :)

I watched the first season; didn't have much interest in continuing beyond that. I omly made it through the first two books.

I barely watch any TV these days; I subscribed to Netflix solely for it, and cancelled straight after the last episode.
