If you were in charge of DS9...

I would have;

- done something more interesting with the bajorans maybe show how after the cardassian aftermath there would be a power vacuum on bajor and how different factions of bajorans would be trying to control the planet, maybe have a civil war in season 1 on bajor but starfleet not allowed to interfere

- maybe have done more stuff with section 31 maybe a 2 parter or a mini story arc about them even seeing bashir being in section 31 and then seeing from within what its like

- Have Sisko as an admiral by season 6

If I were going to have Earth be attacked at all, I'd have had it annihilated. Especially with the other factors involved, like their erectile-dysfunctioning wunderwaffe, it never made much sense that the Breen couldn't have done it.

I wouldn't have dragged out the Dominion war for thirty seven hyperbolic seasons.
:lol: You are a riot. Most of the things I hated and would have kept out/changed have been mentioned.

1. No prophet nonsense. Wormhole aliens, Sisko's fate, and Sisko's retconned conception were all dumb ideas.

2. No Dukat after "Sacrifice of Angels".

It's unbelievable how significantly these two little things damaged the whole show from its first episode to its finale. What a perfect series it would have been without them. They are the two main things that always hold me back from favouring it over TNG, even though it is clearly superior in many ways.

Other less important issues:

1. This whole fixation the showrunners had on keeping the show self-contained and as separate from TNG as possible after the first season didn't significantly hurt the show, but it was a shame that it threw away the potential for a lot of superb quality television. There definitely should have been more interaction between TNG and DS9 characters, especially Sisko and Picard (or Dax and ANYONE, would love to see her jovial self interact with humour-challenged Data), and we should have seen the Enterprise involved in the Dominon War on the show, in Star Trek 9, or both.

2. Rom's voice was nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying. At first I hated the character because of it. After awhile I started to like him and was able to ignore his voice more and just focus on his personality, but it never completely stopped being annoying. The same goes for Zek.

I actually think Dukat DID make exactly the mistake you describe--but his mistake cost him a good measure of his free will and from that point forward he was irrevocably doomed.
Losing his free will is what made him boring. That would have been an okay plot twist if it hadn't been total - have Dukat struggle against it and manage to get out from under their influence to enough of a degree that he could be himself as a character. Watching a pagh-wraith puppet for a whole season just wasn't interesting.

Personally, I don't think having him lose his free will was an inherently boring plot. The trouble I see was in the execution of it--even to see him struggle once, maybe a few times, and fail to get out from under the Pah-Wraith influence--would have been enough.

The "feel" for the moment, that I would have written if I had been in charge, would've been kind of like some of those moments on Pink Floyd's album The Wall where you start to think the lead character is seeing the light--but he fails to take responsibility and to do what he needed to to break the cycle. ("Pink" and Dukat are very much alike, indeed...it's always someone else's fault, never their own responsibility, and their hate is, so they say, a product of society and not their own twisted characters.)

I think that of all the episodes, that scene of Dukat by himself in "Covenant" comes the closest to that sort of moment. I would have liked to see a bit more there, a bit more sign of a struggle.

The moment I have in mind, though, would "feel" something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRcQZ2tnWeg
