IDW Star Trek Ongoing...

Unless I'm missing something, is there anything going on with comics based on TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT? It would be nice to get some variety in the output.

IDW has the TOS and TNG license; their DS9 (and Voyager?) series didn't sell well enough to continue the license.

There's no ongoing series for the other settings, but there was some TNG last year (the tail end of Assimilation^2 plus Hive), and John Byrne's photocomic efforts for TOS.

Was Hive just last year? Geeze, that seems so much longer. Still nice to know TNG is still an option.

As far as TOS goes, there is an adaptation of Harlan Ellison's original script of City on the Edge of Forever, the first issue of which should be out pretty soon, if not already (I'm not actually sure). TNG's quiet at the moment, and as mentioned above, IDW doesn't have the license to do DS9, VOY or ENT.

Once again Lost Apollo has been a very poor story line.

I have to agree. That story was boring and inconclusive.

Add me to the list of disappointed readers. The story had zero surprises while offering no new or interesting ideas. The only compliment I can give the writing is that the characterization was competent (but riddled with cliche).

However, I do disagree with Villordsutch's opinion of the art. I've always liked Corroney's style (especially his covers) and his work here -- while not outstanding -- is no worse than the "house style" IDW seems to favor on this title.

In fact, the only fun aspect of this storyline has been Corroney's "casting" of Larry Hagman as the astronaut character and the I Dream of Jeannie references in the flashbacks.

I enjoyed it.

I found the astronaut being cut off from his daughter in so many ways to be very heartbreaking, and shared the crew's frustration at being able to do so little to help him.

I liked the two-parter. It told a story that makes it plausible how the Botany Bay was able to be built, and no magical blood was used to resolve the conclusion (though there was hint that the victim of the alien world might be cured someday). 3/5 stars, only because I typically typically like two-partners (for being short arcs).

^I think what happened was that they were intended by at least some of the production team to be Caitians but the decision was made to give them a simpler makeup.

Exactly. The script says Caitians but, in interviews, the twins have said they were fitted for tests with cat-like ears and various other appliances.

Similarly, the ST II script says that Saavik has a fair complexion due to her Romulan heritage, and the script for "Yesteryear" specifies that Thelin has blue skin. And, for "Gamesters of Triskelion", the red-skinned drill thrall with a flap of flesh for a nose became an Andorian in time for filming, probably so they could reuse the white wig, antennae, suede tabard and chainmail shirt.

I wonder if an issue of The Q Gambit will have Janeway and Q Junior. I thought the Q trilogy on Voyager was great.

The Defiant looks battle-scarred. Wonder what's the cause of that. And Abramsverse Kirk and Spock fighting alongside Kira? This should be good if they can fit it into just a few pages.

It looks nice, although I'm a little disappointed that events pick up immediately after Countdown. I think I'd have preferred it to be one year later, so Spock having survived has a bit more gravitas.

And what is up with those little tufts of hair above Picard's ears??
