I want to be popular!

You've also changed your username 1-2 times. I partially count you having to shorten you current one.

You get a cookie for that. :D

I was "compelled" to shorten my previous username - I was stretching some people's tiny screens or something. At that time, I posted so little, I'd had the name for like a half year before any complaints were raised. There I was, settled in too.

I still remember years ago when you posted that picture of you with a cowboy hat on sippin a milkshake, Windy ;)

Eh, just not that important. I've been here almost 6 years, wouldn't consider myself "popular". Certainly never make any of the lists. Not overly concerned about it, though, as this is for entertainment and to kill boredom, a supplement to, rather than replacement for, real life.

I'm blunt, can be a dick at times, and instead of playing the overly compassionate person in some threads, I tell it like I see it, giving my opinion or some brutally honest advice rather than what the poster wants to hear. Some hate me for it, or think little of me. Others like me for exactly the same reasons. Meh, can't please them all. And since I'm not playing a character here, no reason to adjust what I'm doing.

Other than having a few trolls that follow me occasionally, I steer clear of both people's good lists and bad, which is pefect!

I have been a member here for almost 9 years, and after all that time I can't help feeling that I should be more popular. I don't know that I've ever done anything to stick out. I want to be the TrekBBS Star Quarterback, with the sexy Orion Slave Girl Cheerleader on my arm. I want the emo kids to hate me because they secretly wish they were just as popular as me. I want the nerds to quiver because they're afraid I'm gonna steal their lunch money. I want the $50,000 shuttlecraft and the $200 VISOR (not because I'm blind, but because they make me look so HOTT).

I want to be in the IN crowd. Right now, I'm kind of on the sidelines. I have my little niche of posters that I communicate with regularly, but I'm not a part of the A Squad.

I've never had a fancy Green username (though I did break into the Briefing Room once back in 2002 and learn that I was almost a Mod). I never have other posters photoshop me into hilarious situations. Hell, there are still tons of people here who think I'm a girl.

I feel like I do all the right things. I gush over Firefly. I drink a lot. I bitch about people's driving habits. Are these not requirements for being popular around here? What else do I need to do?

Also, I can't get that song from "Wicked" out of my head. "Popular! You're gonna be pop-u-lar!"

First of all, getting that damn Wicked song in my head isn't helping your popularity

JonathonWally, you have an impressive memory! Here, have the whole packet of cookies. :D

EDIT: RoJoHen, you oughta' get yourself some cookies, too. They really work! :p

I'm currently eating a protein bar. If I close my eyes really tight I can almost pretend that it's a cookie.

Somewhat ironic but not entirely unexpected that this thread has become quite popular... ;)
I have absolutely no idea.

You're not popular with me. :p ;)

If you can tell me who sung the song I can't get out of MY head right now, you'll be popular with me.

(the lyrics are something like "run away with you; nothing else to do; run away with you, run run run run" but, to coin a phrase, the googles, they do nothing. No, it's not the Supremes, the Corrs, the Who, Velvet Underground, or any of the other suspects variations of those lyrics turn up. Song is an uptempo, bright pop track, probably late 70s or 80s)
"Thorn In My Side" - Eurhythmics

:bolian:

You, however, are now EXTREMELY popular with me.

How on earth you got that from the mangled lyrics I misremembered is beyond me - it's been bugging me for the last half hour or so. Thank you!
I like that song, a bit. :bolian: Plus, at Uni our radio station played that song a LOT. Not the easiest song to identify, I'll admit to that - the melodies and harmonies shift quite a bit during each verse.

Me, I'm not really comfortable with being the centre of everyone's attention at all. I just do the sort of things here that I want to do (whether with disastrous results or otherwise), and if anyone wants to pick up the ball and run with it, then fine, there's room on the horse for two (or more).

As to whether you're a man or a woman, RoJoHen, some time ago I had a discussion with some people in my lounge and it transpired that some didn't know whether I was a man or a woman, with a few getting my gender wrong. Well, for those who still don't know, I'll still keep you guessing. ;)

I would rather be well liked than popular. If I can pop into TrekIRC after a few months absence and people still go "Hey Brew"... well that is good enough for me.

I can empathise with that - I used to use a high school nickname online, seeing as it could be seen as a womans name, a lot of people thought I was female.

I'd guess male. Mainly as my first thought is female - largely due to the very attractive lady in your avatar.

Ah, the old double-double-bluff avatar gambit strategy. Could still be a sly ruse. ;)

I think you must be a girl.

This is because, girls don't seem to mind if they're mistaken for a male online. A lot of guys, like RoJoHen, however, seem to take exception to it. Something to do with being perceived as sissy most probably... whereas a girl might not assume anything as to why the mistake happened... and if she did, she might think she appeared strong-willed or something - and there's nothing negative to that.

Interesting, anyway. :D

Well that, and everyone on the internet is male until proven otherwise.

This whole forum thought I was a girl for the first year and a half of my posting on it. Some of them kept referring to me as female for years after that just for the hell of it. It didn't bother me that much.

I just want the right people to like me. And they do. So I'm pleased.

then you went and changed your username to Iris so didn't do much to discourage the whole "not a girl" myth. :p

RoJoHen, if that reassures you, I will always remember you as Prince Adam of Eternia... ;)

In conclusion, why should I care about being popular here?
