I love..GAGA!!!

I had never seen her before the AMA show, and then last night she was on Jay Leno. The song was interesting, but I really liked the interview. She came off pretty intelligent. She won me over when she said she idolized Judy Garland AND Led Zepplin. Wow...

Well heck, I like Zep and Neil Young, give me a medal. How does this make her special or more talented? (Just asking in a literal sense)

I'll say it again; her performance, and more importantly, her songs were far and away the best part of that show. All the other women were awful..she was unique AND her songs actually had some great chord progressions.

So...yes, GAGA was good!!

Rob
Well to each their own, but it's kinda like Homer guarding the Bee in a Jar situation with the other two morons..... just because you are smarter then those you hold company with, doesn't actually mean you're a genius.

Considering what I seen from the music industry in the last 8-10 years, you could drop a lump of crap in front of a mic, sprinkle glitter on it and you can sell it as gold. It doesn't actually have to sing, we can make it better, faster, stronger......... we have the technology..... and people will buy it because of the lack of options and because we tell them to.

She's better then most of the crap out there today, I'll agree on that..... but things have a looonnngg way to go to get back to any decent quality I'd bother to pay for or waste any of my life on.

I heard better lyrics from a Wiggles song. Anybody can google that to know what Wiggles are, you'll get the joke then.

The music industry has been 90% crap for sixty frigging years, full of one hit wonders and no talent hacks, image riders, teen-idol types... for every Led Zeppelin there are a thousand Alive and Kickin's (remember them? No? They do birthday parties and wedding now apparently). Like movies or anything else, people forget most of the shit they watch and listen to and remember the good stuff. If we're talking about top 40 radio it's basically catchy tunes punctuated by shite, what else is new? Did I miss some golden age of pop music where it was all good all the time?

All your post suggests to me is that you liked the popular music ten years ago and don't like it now, and probably never went out of your way to find the really good stuff then or now. Music is a bit more packaged these days because artists have to sell themselves as a brand to make money because they don't make much from CD sales anymore and have to rely on tours and merchandise they can put their name on, but that has nothing really to do with the music per se.

What music did you pay to listen to a decade ago for which there is no comparison now?

^^

Yeah, look at all the great success George Martin had after the Beatles broke up. Good thing John and Paul had him around to tell them what to do . . .

Examples exist for both arguments, and in any case, you're talking about a producer who worked with the most popular band in history. It goes without saying that anything he would have done afterwards would pale by comparison.

Anyhow, since this is a discussion on Lady Gaga, I'm talking about the role of producer in a modern context.

Before anyone knew who he was, Eminem released Infinite. It was generic, it was derivative, and it was ridiculed. Then Eminem was given the opportunity to work with Dr. Dre, and suddenly he's producing these dark masterpieces, winning Grammys and earning massive approval from the hip hop community.

To continue with the hip hop examples, recent Nas albums are not considered classics. But Illmatic is considered the greatest hip hop album of all time. Did Nas change? No. His producers did --- Illmatic was produced by DJ Premier, Large Professor and Pete Rock. Hip Hop Is Dead was produced by guys like wil.i.am, Scott Storch and Kanye West.

In other words, Album A by popular artist is produced by three of the greatest producers in that genre. Album B by the same popular artist is produced by three newer imitators. Album A is universally hailed as a shining example of what its genre can achieve, praised for its originality, and heralded as the blueprint for which successors must build from. Album B is given lukewarm reviews, acknowledged for its intelligent lyrical content, but panned because of its sound.

I'm sure there are plenty of examples from pop music, modern rock, j-pop, screamo, epic doom metal, and every other genre under the sun.

The big question no one seems to be able to answer? Is this girl actually hot or not?:shrug:

Hard to say now because she hardly ever goes out dressed normally, but she looked darn good back in 2005 before she became Lady GaGa:

Man, I guess she managed a bit more in the last four years than I have...

She's at least more interesting than most of those out there and seems to have a brain in her head.

Is there anything wrong with that?
Unless you're going to tell me that no other artist borrows heavily from other sources, then there should be nothing wrong with what she is doing.

J.

Nothing at all - and as I said in my initial post I don't have a problem with her music, I do think she's talented and more power to those who like her. What rubs me the wrong way is the pretension she's peddling along with her music when it isn't at all justified.

Im not exactly sure what you mean by that. The woman is classically trained, and at least from what I have heard, the construction of some of her songs is far from what is typically heard on the radio.

Rob

Sounds like you need to listen to the radio more often. ;)

I just recently discovered Lady Gaga (yeah, I know... totally living under a rock  :p ) and I really like her music. "Bad Romance" is just an awesome, awesome song.

"I know that we are young and I know that you may love me, But I just can't be with you like this anymore Alejandro"

I like most of her songs on the Fame Monster CD. I think shes cute

"Bad Romance" has a great video. I think my favorite songs of hers are "Paparazzi" and "Poker Face."

I love her.

same here...I really like Speechless and Bad Romance..and if it ever turns out she is a hermaphodite, or whatever it is, I don't care...It shouldn't really matter in this day and age...

:guffaw:

I'm one of those few people who don't care about the BS and only if they can sing or not, and if they are a prick. She seems nice in real life and that always helps.
