I love..GAGA!!!

It could have just been the angle, or she could have purposely jammed something there to make it look like she had one for yet more attention, but she doesn't have a wang-chung, which can be seen on a number of her music videos or concerts.

Then again, if she did turn out to have one, it wouldn't really suprise me.

It's her name that gives me pause. "Lady Gaga", sounds like something a drag queen would use. Who knows, maybe that's why she picked the name. I'm sure she thrives on the controversy.

If she went around looking like she did in 2005 she'd be mistaken for Vanessa Carlton.

You say that like it's a bad thing... :vulcan:

okay, okay, I admit it, my tastes in music are not what you would call sophisticated, I get a bit turned off by all the flash and glitz and all that crap. And by "a bit" I mean "a lot". ;)

I don't *hate* her, I just don't *like* her. I don't see the problem with that.

Wow... you guys actually feel she's that attractive?
Hey, I'll admit to shallowness! I first became interested in her from a series of rather flattering photos of her I ran across.

I will confess, though, that after viewing a lot more of her over the past few days, it turns out she isn't exactly the visual epitome of my type, after all. But she still gets a free pass to the V.I.P. room. ;)

I will say that I think she looks much better as a brunette. What is it with Italian women wanting to be blonde, anyway? :D

Yes, unless she held that same pose - unmoving - for the entire concert, I'd have to say that issue is settled. :techman:

Her name pays homage to some of her idols and influences, one of them being the rock band "Queen", their song "Radio Ga Ga" in particular. The name was so well liked they just stuck "Lady" in front and she became Lady GaGa.

J, that pic is just one in a series. Google my friend, google.

Oh, I will. I'll be doing a lot of googling.
Maybe later I'll even go searching for some pics.

Criticism for using producers... check. In this day and age, I can't imagine why that's a valid critique. You want your music to sound as good as possible, so you get people who know how to massage your sound to its full potential. Even those musicians who are good producers in their own right still bring in additional help to produce a good album.

You're misrepresenting what was said. I didn't criticise her for using producers, who would? They are more often than not the real talent and innovators in pop music after all. However, I used it as an example to show the music she's making is not at all removed from the music made by the Britneys and Beyonces of the music world despite the hype and pretence (hell, Gaga even turns up in the new Beyonce single).

Ummm..I disagree. I got her album today. My daughter listens to Spears and Shikera and all the others all day long. The chords I have heard on GAGA's songs, are not the typical bubblegum stuff I have heard in recent times.

Now, I grew up on the Beatles, Manilow, Led Zepplin, ELO, Prince, The Police, Billy Joel and others and while she may not be up there with any of them, her song construction, as best as I can tell, is of better ability than her peers..as best as I can tell.

i wouldnt exactly count myself as a fan, but i have noticed that one of the greatest things she has in her corner is that she is actually a vocal artist, as opposed to most contemporary "pre-packaged & autotuned corporate this-is-what-we-want-you-to-listen-to fools"

Well put. I totally agree.

She's alright, I mean, I won't call myself a fan yet, but she is one of the most interesting pop artist in the last ten years. She has the whole package, musical talent, good voice, great stage presence, fuck you attitude, and she interviews well. Maybe she'll be one of the great ones, maybe she won't, but I'm not saying she sucks until she actually does.

Producers are the innovators in almost every type of music.

I've got a stack of EQ magazines three feet from me as I type this, and every issue profiles a famous recording and the production work that went into it -- from Phil Spector's "wall of sound" in the 1960s, to the unique tone of bands like CKY, to the signature production sounds of guys like Pete Rock.

Using Pete Rock as an example, it's obvious emcees like Nas and Grand Puba (in their early years) were masterful at lyricism, mic presence and technical ability, but the songs still would not have sounded the same without that Pete Rock feel -- the snares that make a powerful "THWAPPP!" sound, the persistent jingling percussion, the chopped up jazz samples.

Unless we're talking classical music, stripped-down folk music, or live recordings, it's more likely than not that a producer had just as much to do with a record's sound as the artist did.

^^

Yeah, look at all the great success George Martin had after the Beatles broke up. Good thing John and Paul had him around to tell them what to do . . .

Check out the likes of Robyn and Roisin Murphy and then get back to me. Gaga is making stock standard bubblegum pop - it's just that she's taking her look* and sound from European acts.

*Warning - fan war ahead. ;)

Not really. Stock standard bubblegum pop is generally brainless (no offense to people who like bubblegum pop), and also relies heavily on auto-tune. Lady GaGa is more geared toward Glam Rock/Pop and borrows heavily from such artists as Queen, David Bowie and so on.

Her name may have been inspired by Queen and she's paid homage to Bowie with some of her looks, but when it comes to her music she's taking virtually all of her cues from synth-happy Euro dance\pop acts.

Ummm, maybe. I think she sounds like a cross between the Pet Shop Boys--Thomspon Twins-- with some Jim Stienman (meat loaf's writer) thrown in...

I like her.

Is there anything wrong with that?
Unless you're going to tell me that no other artist borrows heavily from other sources, then there should be nothing wrong with what she is doing.

Nothing at all - and as I said in my initial post I don't have a problem with her music, I do think she's talented and more power to those who like her. What rubs me the wrong way is the pretension she's peddling along with her music when it isn't at all justified.

Im not exactly sure what you mean by that. The woman is classically trained, and at least from what I have heard, the construction of some of her songs is far from what is typically heard on the radio.

I think a lot of the anti-GAGA stuff, not yours or anyone elses on this thread I want to make clear, is because of her possible sexual prefences, she might be a transgender, or, because she claims to be influenced, not by any modern crap singers/groups, but she is inspired by Freddie Mercury, Meatloaf, Led Zepplin AND, wow, Judy Garland. What a mix!!!

Had she said Madonna, Gwen Stephany, Nirvana, Bob Marley, Sting, Elton John and especially Alicia Keys, she'd be more 'hip'
and credible.
