I loath Orteges!!

Huh? Ortegas' hair is cool. End of story.

SNW must be in a pretty good place if this is the prevailing moan of the week.

Although as sharp as it is ...

Every time I hear about how someone in Trek is a hotshot pilot, I keep thinking of that other star franchise. To be fair though this was a thing in old Trek too, notably Riker is described as being the only pilot that Jellico can turn to who has the skill to mine the Cardassian fleet. Strangely enough we don't see this aspect of Riker at all throughout most other episodes, so I assume he must keep up his piloting skills via holodeck simulations or something.

Ambassador Spock: Erica was the best starpilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. I understand you've become quite a good pilot yourself. And she was a good friend.

Cristobal Rios: How did my grandmother die?

Ambassador Spock: A young Vulcan named Valeris, who was a pupil of mine until she turned to evil, helped the Khitomer conspiracy hunt down and destroy Starfleet officers. She betrayed and murdered your grandmother.

Why do people think wesley does not make a good kirk? well part of the reason is that he does not have a jork-stock body like shatner has. he looks tiny compared to shatner in tos. it may be stereotyping but it does have some common call backs that most male lead in fantasy and science fiction always have a jock like build. In fact people like Shatner and Christopher Reeves were were the gold standard in defining that kind of male lead.

Ortegas is great, fantastic.

Also, her log entry scene in the beginning of "...Lotus Eaters" was hilarious.

There's nothing spoiler-y in my post, but, hey, couldn't this be a spoiler thread, since to properly discuss the topic we'd need to delve into what she's actually done in the episodes? Or are we expected to spoiler code every other post? Come on.

Also, loathe is the verb.

Most Trek shows seem to have at least one annoying character that is generally disliked or divisive;

TOS- Chekov (though his screaming has become somewhat more amusing over time)
TNG - Wesley
DS9 - Bashir (in the earlier seasons)
Voyager - Neelix
Enterprise - Archer (yes, he wasn't well-liked online during S1/S2. Constantly made fun of. The Gazelle speech. Only became more tolerable when they made him into Jack Bauer. Thanks Manny Coto).
Discovery - Burnham/Tilly
Pic- Jurati/Elnor/Raffi
SNW - Ortegas (and probably Pelia)

So there's a precedence for Ortegas.

My issue with Ortegas is her dialogue is written so blatantly to connect with the Gen Z crowd.

It's giving me vibes of this;

Is that a Twilight? I have never seen Twilight, but I get distinct 'Sexy Vampire' vibes.

That is most certainly not William Shatner.
Yes. Shatner has more of a brute stocky body during tos. Wesley is more lean muscles. even in vampire diaries his brother damian had a bigger body build than him.

I don't mind Ortegas at all so far, although as others have pointed out she really needs some character development. "Quippy smartarse genius pilot" is a nice start - albeit something that's far from new or unusual - but something substantially more would be much better. As for her hair...really. Couldn't even begin to care less about it. And as for the insinuation that it somehow indicates the character is gay...well, sometimes being on staff here is a pain in the arse. Stops me saying what I'd really like to say about how utterly stupid notions like that are.

Thank you for your input.
Don't sweat stuff like that. Most people in most parts of this board are much more welcoming to new posters. I hope you'll like it here. :mallory:

Good grief! In all, dare I say, seriousness I don't think the SNW uniform does him any favors. He just looks skinny. It's the way his neck comes out of the collar. Maybe it's the way they shoot him?

Zounds! Paul Wesley's Kirk is the Excelsior class of Star Trek actors! Disliked or derided as funny looking in his first appearance, but later accepted and eventually loved. And finally "Hey, why can't HE get a show?"

Huh? Ortegas' hair is cool. End of story.

This made my day! And it's not even 8am!

Oh, and another reason that Ortegas is awesome? Pike CLEARLY thinks that Ortegas is awesome. That has to count for a lot.

As for character? Yes, this last episode is the widest range of character that we've gotten to see (so far). But how much of Sulu or Uhura did we see in TOS? (Chekov only a little more so.) The most "character" that we saw was the actor's own personalities shining through.

The only reason we have higher expectations for Erica is that she's an "in the credits" character. But she's a wonderful ingredient in the SNW soup.

I like Ortegas for the most part. She can be a little informal at times for my taste, but I chalk that up to that kind of informality being in Abrams/Kurtzman-era Trek. What I hope we eventually get is more of her backstory and learn more about her ties to Pike.

He has more of a model look. Also this pic must be like a decade ago.

You weren't talking about his look. You said he didn't have a 'jock body'. When presented with evidence that refutes your statement you move the goalposts.

So far, so Valden.

And what difference does time make? In his most recent appearance we caught a glimpse of him changing clothes and he has a muscled, toned 'jock' body.

Try again.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Gives Fans That Ortegas Content They've Been Craving

It's fantastic to see Ortegas finally getting to show off her badass pilot skills, but it's even better getting to see her react to all of the zaniness in the episode. Navia's delivery of Ortegas' discovery that she is the only one who can save the day is amazing. She's so relatable as she questions the computer and herself, saying and asking "I fly the ship?" in different tones until the computer reassures her enough times that it actually grates her nerves. She gets to the bridge and knows in her bones that she can fly the ship. Spock only knows that he believes in her, another deeply known thing like the friendship between La'an (Christina Chong), Pike, and M'Benga, which saves La'an's life on the away mission.

Many of the characters on the Enterprise are admirable and inspirational, but they can be a little difficult to relate to on a personal, human basis. They're the best of the best of Starfleet, the top people in their fields, and they're all heroic in big, grand ways. Some of the younger officers like Uhura are easier to identify with because they're still learning the ropes, but Ortegas feels the most truly, deeply human of them all. That's meant that she's often used as a sort of audience stand-in or the glue that holds the crew together, but thankfully the folks behind "Strange New Worlds" have realized she is capable of so much more.

She's my favorite Trek pilot, ever.
