Regarding her and Spock... Spock is kind of like a guy on the spectrum, who has no sense of social nuance. As someone who deals with the same issue, and has lost out on a great deal because of it... I can tell you that having someone there to give you a heads-up when you've stepped over the line could be invaluable. I think my life might have been a lot happier if I'd had someone like that. If nothing else, I'd have more tools in my box than "avoid unnecessary conversations with anyone high school age and older".

And as for the hair, there's nothing wrong with having a distinctive "look". Back in the 80's, Mr. T built a career with a mohawk and a pile of gold jewelry.

2. She has an attitude problem and doesn't know how to speak to her superiors "Know when to shut up Spock" - can you imagine any pre-2016 character saying that to a superior??
Reminiscent of Boma in TOS I think in lack of respect to Spock. Also, A Quality of Mercy did imply a darker future where she goes full on speciest. It's interesting to see if that was a one time thing or something the writers will follow up on

Whether you realize it or not this whole post is extremely homophobic.

Most people definitely do not assume someone is "queer" just by looking at their hairstyle.
(never mind that the use of that word is considered a slur now-a-days)

This are not my personal opinions, I was talking about how society/audience tend to make assumption based on how they see people at sight. society has a history of descripting what I will call stereotypical images of people that has become en-graded in people psyche were they make quick assumption.

Why do people think wesley does not make a good kirk? well part of the reason is that he does not have a jork-stock body like shatner has. he looks tiny compared to shatner in tos. it may be stereotyping but it does have some common call backs that most male lead in fantasy and science fiction always have a jock like build. In fact people like Shatner and Christopher Reeves were were the gold standard in defining that kind of male lead.

i will not call ortega queer until it is official but i have seen people on reddit and even here on bbs, assume she will be the queer character, which is interesting because my money was and still is on uhura, however I based that on a reality that trek is progressive and they have said they will employ lgbtq characters in lgbtq roles.

Ortega hair is bad though, I see people complaining about it on jammer trek website too. so the real question is why does she have a bad hair cut? why would a girl have a bad hair cut in a tv show? There has to be a reason why and I think in the case , it may be to ease off male gaze so women are not seen as too sexy than her been actually queer.

i never made assumption she was queer, however i made references to people thinking she is queer and maybe understanding why. there is a difference.

6 years in, so, military opinion.. we cut up all the time, some days its so much laughing, quips, barbs etc. that no work gets done. Its basically a family (insert Vin Diesel FAMILY Meme) , as I would think, being on a ship for years at a time would make it a family as well. Plus, its Pike in charge, I'm sure if another more formal captain was in charge, she'd change her attitude, but with pike's lais e fair attitude, he doesn't mind.

Plus.. Just look at Tom Paris, basically the same character.

Her character is a sarcastic, wise cracking hotshot pilot, I have no problems with her, her deminor, or her look. Honestly one of my favorite characters that i WISH would get more back story..
This. All of this.

Thank you for the military perspective. She Who is My Wife is ex-Army AND a Star Trek fan and she LOVES this show. (Did I mention we're re-watching it AGAIN?)

I agree that Chris certainly sets the tone. If this keeps up I'm going to have to say he's my favorite

Tom Paris is the perfect example. Come on, Erica is Maverick with a space ship. (And if those words don't give you all the goosebumps why are you watching Star Trek? :D )

Unlike several times in TOS, Erica and Spock's interactions are always clearly from friendship. One of the things I didn't like in QoM was putting Erica in the Styles role.

None of them are sexy really, I don’t mean they’re ugly but they aren’t given sex appeal like Troi, Dax, Seven or T’Pol.

i think that is more hollywood tv shows/movies than me. hollywood creates stereotypical images of characters that people have become used to.

As i said usually when a girl has a bad hair cut in a tv or show and there is no context to why, the story always lean too, she has a bad hair cut because she is not into guys. hollywood has been playing this stereotype since the 80s and that has been effective in audience mind. that is what I was pointing out.

if you read my post, I don't think ortega will be the queer character. I personally think it is uhura.

The most likely reason is because of an underlying bigotry toward gay people.
Anybody fixating on a characters hair to define that characters sexual orientation is the one with the problem, not the character.

For Pike.

That's it.

Good.

Dear lord there is more to life than sex appeal. I hate that so damn much.

Most Trek shows seem to have at least one annoying character that is generally disliked or divisive;

TOS- Chekov (though his screaming has become somewhat more amusing over time)
TNG - Wesley
DS9 - Bashir (in the earlier seasons)
Voyager - Neelix
Enterprise - Archer (yes, he wasn't well-liked online during S1/S2. Constantly made fun of. The Gazelle speech. Only became more tolerable when they made him into Jack Bauer. Thanks Manny Coto).
Discovery - Burnham/Tilly
Pic- Jurati/Elnor/Raffi
SNW - Ortegas (and probably Pelia)

So there's a precedence for Ortegas.

My issue with Ortegas is her dialogue is written so blatantly to connect with the Gen Z crowd.

It's giving me vibes of this;

Poochie-Unlock.webp

My opinion stands. People put sex appeal on a god level status for a show. It's painful, frustrating and shallow.

well i never really could get into game of thrones because of the graphic sex scenes but once I realised how great the story and characters were, I was able to move past it and enjoy the show. for some reason the sex appeal does nothing for me in game on thrones, I find uhura serenading spock in tos charlie x more appealing and that was the 60s and this is my level of sex appeal in star trek.

Be that as it may, I dont mind shows that have sex appeal as long as they have the great story to back it up, hence why many HBO shows do so well even if sometimes I call some of them soft-porn.

However we do live in a very social conscious society, i felt a change in how women were presented in tv and movies after the me too and times up movement and the cal for more women in leading roles but don't worry Ortega is not going to be a sex symbol. the closest character we have to a sex symbol on the show so far is Captain Pike.

In other words, dressed like officers instead of wearing outfits that looked like they were applied with a paint sprayer.

My opinion stands. People put sex appeal on a god level status for a show. It's painful, frustrating and shallow.

And TNG was walking away from it, and DS9 avoided it completely aside from a few episodes (mostly the MU ones). Voyager too, for three seasons.

Then, Seven's outfit. One step BACKWARD for Trek-kind.

Regarding Ortegas' hair, Sisko said it best in "Past Tense", maybe alluding to Brooks's own frustration at not being able to look the way he wanted: "it's your head, and your decision."

Eh, we'll see. Real life has been filled with friends (and even family members, like my own brother) who weren't what they appeared to be, who did things I never in a million years would've seen coming. In my brother's case I knew him for 30 years and still didn't even remotely see some of the things he did coming, up to and including booing a black guy at comic-con for asking Stan Lee a question about increasing diversity in comic books (when I called out my brother on this, he said he was "fighting political correctness") and outright posting online that Ilhan Omar was a cult member in the weeks leading up to January 6 (our father literally had to plead with me not to refer him to the FBI in the aftermath of that horrific day). Not to mention hazing me and forcing me to write self-demeaning emails when I was ill and locked in a car with him. Oh, and my brother isn't some gangster, he's a licensed medical doctor.

I knew my brother for 30 years and never saw that coming. Ortegas and Spock interacting a few times in a professional setting where she has to put up a professional demeanor regardless isn't going to convince me of anything.

Agreed to all. And sometimes I feel like the only reason she gets called out is because she's a she who "looks" gay. Because quipping on the bridge is nothing new.

I think it was alternate timeline version. Hopefully. But she may have trouble with him on a personal level and I think that kind of interpersonal conflict can make for interesting stories.
