I Know Im A Herbert, but............................

I don't feel were supposed to like or dislike it. Severin and his group liked it, a lot of the crew liked it. Scotty, that crabby old bastard, didn't. I thought it was fine, but really liked the jam session with Spock.
I think it's deliberately dissonant in comparison to the regular running of the ship.

Liking music, of course, is a subjective thing. I don't care about it one way or the other since it served the story fine.

She wasn't in it :)

Lt. Palmer was sitting in.

I would have bet $$ on Nichelle being in the episode, it's been that long since I watched TWtE. LOL

Off to the archives...

"Elizabeth Rogers, who was 34, returned to sit in for Uhura at
communications, as Lt. Palmer. She last played this role in “The Doomsday
Machine,” and also provided the voice of The Companion in
“Metamorphosis.” Rogers said, “I got the part on [‘The Doomsday
Machine’] when Uhura [Nichelle Nichols] had a singing engagement. I was
used as an instant ‘threat’ replacement [to keep her in line].” -- Mark Cushman These Are The Voyages, Season Three

That last sentence... Guess Roddenberry, Coon or DesiLu would have fired her for being uppity:-(

I have no feelings for the songs, they're the same as dialog for these people. They are part of their characterization and the story and illustrate the differences between the free spirits and the stuffed shirts running the ship. I like Adam's "gotta clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy" though. It made me laugh as a kid. I do enjoy the "Far Out Jam" music, it's got a nice beat to it.

I enjoy TWtE, Sometimes I want camp and unintentional silliness in my day instead of darkness, and I liked Adam's voice. Was Charles Napier really singing? Speaking of which, they make an episode with live musical performing in it and Nichelle DOESN'T sing?

He wrote the song lyrics, which are pretty spot on for TOS.

I think he was singing, ADR/superimposed as a separate track as it's easier to do a separate recording than to try a real take of singing only to have to restart if there's even a single problem that happens during the scene.

Shame Lt Uhura wasn't in it, but it'd be a stretch for her to join the space hippies, and there's no juxtaposing context to have the Enterprise crew belch out into song unless they were so far into the hippie shtick.

I enjoy TWtE's bundle of ideas, played straight (it's merely unintentionally camp), even if the execution of the ideas are rushed or glossed over. It clearly wants to say a lot but lacks the time to explore most of it.

And, here it comes, I still maintain that "Herbert" was pertaining to Herbert Armstrong, the coincidences are otherwise quite remarkable: https://www.davidanthembookseller.c...ch-department/hippies-hypocrisy-and-happiness

Not necessarily. That redshirt idiot twiddling his hands on the bridge could only happen in the third year....and those who've seen Nichelle in TRUCK TURNER do know it ain't no thang to bring on da swing. Until this day it never occurred to me Uhura could have livened things up while joining Napier in a battle of the space generations. If THE SOPRANOS can recast excellent actresses for the sake of visual continuity, a well-made director's cut of WAY TO EDEN could place Uhura where she deserves to be: the groovin' briefing room. Kim Stinger could dub her voice. Who's with me?
