I think it's deliberately dissonant in comparison to the regular running of the ship.
Liking music, of course, is a subjective thing. I don't care about it one way or the other since it served the story fine.

I have no feelings for the songs, they're the same as dialog for these people. They are part of their characterization and the story and illustrate the differences between the free spirits and the stuffed shirts running the ship. I like Adam's "gotta clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy" though. It made me laugh as a kid. I do enjoy the "Far Out Jam" music, it's got a nice beat to it.

I think he was singing, ADR/superimposed as a separate track as it's easier to do a separate recording than to try a real take of singing only to have to restart if there's even a single problem that happens during the scene.
Shame Lt Uhura wasn't in it, but it'd be a stretch for her to join the space hippies, and there's no juxtaposing context to have the Enterprise crew belch out into song unless they were so far into the hippie shtick.
I enjoy TWtE's bundle of ideas, played straight (it's merely unintentionally camp), even if the execution of the ideas are rushed or glossed over. It clearly wants to say a lot but lacks the time to explore most of it.

Until this day it never occurred to me Uhura could have livened things up while joining Napier in a battle of the space generations. If THE SOPRANOS can recast excellent actresses for the sake of visual continuity, a well-made director's cut of WAY TO EDEN could place Uhura where she deserves to be: the groovin' briefing room. Kim Stinger could dub her voice. Who's with me?

Also, I've always been irked by this smug, entitled bohemian getting special treatment because his father is the Catullan ambassador. There should be a special chamber in Hell for foreigners who abuse their diplomatic immunity. "He stole a spacecraft? No problem!"
And I just saw at Rad's Memory Alpha page that the actor may have come to mind precisely because the character was somebody's son. Turns out the actor was somebody's son at Paramount. I never knew that.
Edit: I also did NOT know this. He played a redshirt!
