I just watched Star Trek V

The shuttlebay always makes me cringe though as it just looks terribly cheap and tiny compared to the TMP design.

You realize Shatner was wandering through the sets of Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America", having just been told there was no budget for a shuttledeck set for ST V. Suddenly Shatner realized that, if he pleaded with Paramount not to pull down the luxurious ballroom set, he could just have the goldleaf trim painted over and... instant shuttledeck.

I think it had one of the better bridge sets for the films, some of the changes for VI would have made it perfect, but unfortunatly they also changed some things which I didnt like.

I was never really keen on that Bridge set. I liked the new style of consoles being introduced, but everything in front of around Spocks console to the viewscreeen seemed a little too long and plain. Moving the placement of the doors for VI broke it up a little bit better.

Are you serious? Say what you will about V, but it had the BEST bridge of any Enterprise, before or since. I was really disapointed they didn't use it again in VI. I also wish they had adopted it for TNG. The events of "The Best of Both Worlds" a year later would have gien them the perfect excuse. The E-D had been shot all to hell by the Borg, and what with the fleet all tore up as well, they had to dig up whatever parts they could find, and right there in the fleet musem was the bridge module of the E-A, so they put it on the D. Too bad they didn't.

INSURRECTION and NEMESIS each managed to out-crappy TFF by a country mile apiece.

hardly
I think we can both agree that TFF is the worst Kirk-era movie(at least to date). But NEMESIS? Its problems are beyond well-known and recognized and INSURRECTION tried like hell to be more than it was but couldn't shake the feel that it was just an overblown TNG or DS9 episode with better effects.

I have had a very complex relationship with and attitude towards TFF over the years. I disliked it when I first saw it 11 years ago, but then I grew to like how it handled the main characters, its humour and its beautiful score. These days, I tend to be less fond of it. The SFX are awful and the story is clumsy. It's sometimes over-criticized, but it definitely isn't Trek at its best.

If so then it's my opinion that you're both on crack. I'm just watching it now, and it's definitely top two. Worst is TSFS, without a doubt, followed by either the pandering TVH or the tedious, pretentious TUC. In fact, it's only TUC's production values that keep it from being absolutely worst.

You're definitely in the minority. But I respect ya so I'll respect your opinion.

There is no such thing as a bad Star Trek film (yet). Some are just less awesome than others.

I would have heartily agreed with you right up until the point the Logitech joystick popped out of its hidey-hole in Insurrection.

And as cheesy as the movie undoubtedly is, there are some absolutely wonderful moments in it. DeForest Kelley owns this movie, especially his anguished cry of "My God, don't do this to me!" when he realizes what Sybok is up to. And Spock's beautifully subtle response when Sybok says he knows him too well: "Do you?", followed by his total repudiation of Sybok's cause shortly afterwards.

A great movie? Not even close. Embarrassing to some of the supporting cast? Yeah, pretty much. Way more heart than any of the Next Generation films? Absolutely.

This is a very good assessment, and serves as a reminder of why, to me, even a relative Trek clunker has enough great moments to keep me watching. I think I may have turned off TNG "Night Terrors" once, and possibly DS9 "Move Along Home," but STV isn't in the turn-it-off category.

This man speaks the truth.

I've always enjoyed STV. To this day, when we sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" with the kids, I think of Kirk, McCoy, and Spock.

Joe, gently down a stream

Thanks, guys! Glad to know I'm not alone. :)

The fifth movie could use a CGI Remastering to fix the crappy Bran Ferren effects. That would go a ways toward making the movie more pleasant to sit through.
