I just watched Star Trek V

Shat was supposed to fight Lava-men in the last segment. Probably would have torn his uniform, done several Kirk-moves, and kicked Lavaman ass. History laments.

It wasn't lava men, it was soppost to be a rock monster. Which if you've ever seen Galaxy Quest, that is prity much what it was ment to look like, only they ran out of money and it was ultimately cut from the final production.

ROCKMAN: NO MOLTEN I!!!

I greatly enjoy this movie. Of all the films, it seems to me to be closest in spirit to the series.

I prefer it to The Voyage Home, which is a fan favorite for some reason (run of the mill 'fish-out-of-water' story). Spock walking around cursing and mind-melding with a whale is no less silly than giving the Vulcan neck pinch to a horse.

I'll admit some of it was good. The opening credits were fantastically conceived, the ending credits were even better.

But on a more serious note, it did have a few good scenes, the pain scene was probably the best, but I have to say, this is suppost to be a sci-fi film, and to have God in it? Just no.

Why not? Star Trek is numerous times shown beings or races beyond our human understanding. Is a deity not but a higher form of life? If all you focus on is "God" from a skeptic point of view, you're missing the whole point of the movie. Personally except for the jetboots, the Final Frontier is one of my favorites.

It also has some brilliant lines:

"What does God need with a starship?" :techman:

"I believe I overshot the mark by one level."
"Nobody's perfect."

"I liked him better before he died."

"You really piss me off Jim."

"Look at it this way; it'll be a good workout."
"Or a heart-attack."

"I think this new ship was put together by monkies."

"I need my pain!"

"Are we dreaming?"

"I cannot go with you."

I also love:

"I am well-versed in the classics, Doctor." "Then how come you don't know 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat'?"

"You know, you never cease to amaze me." "Nor I myself."

"Damn you, sir: you will try."

"I lost a brother once...I was lucky I got him back."

And as cheesy as the movie undoubtedly is, there are some absolutely wonderful moments in it. DeForest Kelley owns this movie, especially his anguished cry of "My God, don't do this to me!" when he realizes what Sybok is up to. And Spock's beautifully subtle response when Sybok says he knows him too well: "Do you?", followed by his total repudiation of Sybok's cause shortly afterwards.

A great movie? Not even close. Embarrassing to some of the supporting cast? Yeah, pretty much. Way more heart than any of the Next Generation films? Absolutely.

I'll be disagreed with, of course; people hating Star Trek V and mocking those of us who have a soft spot in our hearts for it is as old as the movie itself. But you know...I don't care. :p

To be fair, a new DVD/BluRay "Special Director's Edition" of STAR TREK V could be released now with modern CGI putting the Rock Men back into the movie and they'd likely be far more realistic and better-looking. Shatner always wanted the Rock Men sequence in the film but it was Paramount's time and budget cutting that 86'ed the idea and now all we have are cutting room floor still shots.

uh... God wasn't in it.
the exploration of God - the search for God - is a prominent theme in SciFi, and in Roddenberry's work. The movie franchise started with it.

You make a good point. When people tell me that it's silly for Spock to mind meld with a horse, I tend to point out his mind melding with a whale in the previous movie is generally considered a good point of ST IV. I mean, because every one of the movies up until STV made perfect sense.

This is a very good assessment, and serves as a reminder of why, to me, even a relative Trek clunker has enough great moments to keep me watching. I think I may have turned off TNG "Night Terrors" once, and possibly DS9 "Move Along Home," but STV isn't in the turn-it-off category.

V isnt the best of the films, but in alot of ways it isnt the worst.

I think it had one of the better bridge sets for the films, some of the changes for VI would have made it perfect, but unfortunatly they also changed some things which I didnt like.

I was never really keen on that Bridge set. I liked the new style of consoles being introduced, but everything in front of around Spocks console to the viewscreeen seemed a little too long and plain. Moving the placement of the doors for VI broke it up a little bit better.

The shuttlebay always makes me cringe though as it just looks terribly cheap and tiny compared to the TMP design.

This man speaks the truth.

I've always enjoyed STV. To this day, when we sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" with the kids, I think of Kirk, McCoy, and Spock.

Joe, gently down a stream

INSURRECTION and NEMESIS each managed to out-crappy TFF by a country mile apiece. They might have vastly superior effects and even less choppy editing and directing, but Shatner's movie had heart and tried to be more than a two-part TV episode. It felt far more epic.
