I just love TNG!

I just started watching my TNG DVDs. I'm almost finished with season one. I'm surprised how good it is, I've forgotten most of the things about it, since I watched it over 10 years ago.

One question: Why did they kill Tasha Yar so early? Was it because the actress playing Yar wanted out?

Denise Crosby (Yar) was tired of being Ms. "Hailing Frequencies Open, Captain," so being an impatient young actress with delusions of grandeur wanted out.

Finally! A thread that singing TNG's praises and not tearing it apart. Like most of you, TNG holds a special place for me, as I watched it during its original run from age 16 to 23. I have fond memories of watching the show in college with about 30 people each week on early Saturday evening before going out. Good times!

Peace.

I love Trek!! :) In general :)
I honestly have trouble rating them in any kind of order because they all have various strengths and weaknesses.

TOS: Classic. I love Kirk. He's the only captain in ANY of the series to say, "I'm a soldier, not a diplomat". They were a rogue bunch and their complete disregard for the prime directive was awesome. However, many of the episodes were completely ridiculous. The movies were brilliant.

TNG: While some of the early episodes were awkward and the actors uncomfortable in their roles, the show quickly comes around and has some incredibly powerful episodes, tackling several ethical issues and offering meaningful, insightful messages throughout. Episodes are generally self contained mini-plots and you could watch in any order (though story archs are clearly present and well accomplished-- they are fragmented throughout the series).

DS9: Great first season. Great characters and probably the best acting throughout. Incredible continuity-- instead of being independent of eachother the episodes meld into one another brilliantly (great for die hard trek fans only watching from season one on chronologically, casual fans are less likely to enjoy this series). Downsides? DS9 is often preachy and annoying and sometimes it feels more like a soap opera than Star Trek.

VOY: Offers the best comedic episodes of all the series. Excellent character development, though the writing of Janeway is often incoherent and bipolar-- Tes, Seven, the Doctor, Paris, Torris and Neelix are develop brilliantly. Episodes are, like TNG, self-contained and the series offers little continuity or sweeping plot (yeah, they're trying to get home-- but the light years "shed" off the journey here and there are meaningless).

And there's my view :)

TNG is what I grew up with... literally. I was conceived the same month Encounter at Farpoint aired for the first time and born the following June. My earliest Trek memory is watching a rerun of "The Child" with dad and asking what was happening when that ball of light entered Troi. He told me she was pregnant because of that, and for a while afterwards I believed that's how babies were made: Stars (that's what the ball looked like) came from the sky and entered the mommy's belly. Of course when mom became pregnant with my little brother I learned about fertilized eggs and all that (by reading a book for kids about where babies come from. I was two years old and could ALMOST pronounce the word "fertilized.")

I could only identify one character by name, and that was Geordi. I thought his VISOR was really cool. I remember holding a comb in front of my eyes and pretending I was him. I also couldn't tell the difference between Kirk and Picard. I'd always hear about Captain Kirk cuz he's a big hero, but I'd always see Picard on TV, so I assumed he was Kirk. Either way, I knew the bald guy was "the Captain."

Overall, though. I didn't really like Star Trek then. I accepted it as something I had to live with since dad watched it ALL THE TIME.

However, I gained a minor interest in it when I heard the Picard Song on the internet (which helped me finally learn who that bald guy really was ). I watched an episode of TNG on Youtube, and I was hooked. I forgot which one it was. Data instantly became my favorite character. And I guess you could say the rest is history, but it didn't happen that long ago (it was this February actually.)

TNG is slammed a lot on the BBS because it's not DS9. I love all the Trek shows with different levels of intensity, but loving TNG is nothing to be ashamed of - it's one of my favorite Trek series!

The other day my friend told me he watched and episode of it, he is totally anti-trek btw, and he said he hated it cuz it had crappy acting and a stupid plot about random planets. I told him, :"WHat the fuck are you talking about?"

Just finished watching "Final Mission". A really good episode, far better then i remember it. Currently watching "The Loss", and boy oh boy does Deanna really grate in that episode. Felt like slapping her after the way she spoke to Beverly.

I also enjoyed Wesleys replacement, Ensign Tess Allenby...
