I have a bit of a problem with La'an being bullied (And Spock in st2009)

And at least one of those subversive bullies served on the U.S.S. Valiant just two years later and risked getting Jake and Nog killed.

There is dog nature and maple tree nature . . . and human nature.

We have inborn, hereditary (redundant, I know) tendencies.

More malleable than other species, through culture, yes. Eg, violence is way down, but still present. Though its suppression/repression bubbles up in other craziness.

In a college town with my family, two things happened real quick and, instantly, nerdy teacher I am yelling at a guy in a pickup truck and ready to fight him if he comes back. The cave man is just below the surface. And of course a lot of our cave man and woman behavior is on the surface and normal. Warring via sport and business, hunting and gathering at Goodwill, being tribal in our opinions, courting, loving, and fornicating with the best partners we can.

"You can throw nature out with a pitchfork, but she always comes back with a vengeance."

We're still going to be recognizably human in behavior 300 or 400 years from now. No amount of more enlightened education is going to filter all of those traits out of us and likely never will.
If that were not the case studying history or ancient writings would be a rather futile exercise. It would have no relevance.

Humans are gonna human. Millions of years of evolution don't just disappear because someone thinks "we can be better than that."

Like I said, I fully believe that humans can get better and will get better. I also believe bullying culture can and will be eliminated.

I also believe that it won't have happened by the 23rd century in Star Trek and the point of bullying is to nip it in the bud in childhood because that is a time to learn NOT to be a bully.

I buy the bullying, I just don't get why the Noonien-Singh family wouldn't just change their name if the stigma was that heavy. All they'd have to do is drop the Noonien, and you're left with the extremely common last name Singh.

I had assumed that anyone named Hitler would have changes their legal surname after WWII. However, after researching the subject, it seems that not everyone is so concerned about embarrassing names or schoolyard bullies. Just ask Dr. Gay Hitler, a dentist in Ohio (according to Wilipedia at least).

But since La'an clearly does have a problem with the bullying and the shame, one wonders why she doesn't just legally change her name to Gay Hitler.

One of the interesting aspects of human behavior is how often people don't do things just because of ease. A certain amount of pride comes in to play, even in the face of adversity. It can be as simple a desire to prove people wrong, to overcome or just pure stubbornness.

Do I think bullying would go away? Certainly. But, do I think it could still happen? Yes.
