I don't care anymore

MAY 2009!? Look, I had misgivings about a prequel film, but based on what I'd read I was starting to look forward to it. But now? It's a year and a half until the movie comes out! How can I possibly care? That's so long! At least when it was Christmas it was coming out THIS YEAR. It was the forseable future. May 2009? That's YEARS away! I'll be so much OLDER then. My life will be completely DIFFERENT. Essentially I'll be an other person! How can I bring myself to care about a movie which I won't even see, but rather a future version of myself will see? It's so far in the future that some older Trek fans might be DEAD by then! I might be dead by then, the state of the world today! Nuclear war could come by then! Nimoy himself will be almost 80 by the time of the premiere! I don't care anymore. MAYBE in one year's time I'll care. Until then, I suggest that this forum be CLOSED until AT LEAST Christmas 2008. There will be NOTHING to talk about until about then, I can assure you!

MAY 2009!?

I know what you mean!!!

May '09 is SO FAR AWAY, it is actually NEVER EVEN GOING TO COME!!!!!

Maybe we should all just do a giant communal Jonestown-like TrekBBS suicide thing and be done with it!

(since May '09 is NEVER going to arrive anyway, right?)

That is kind of ridiculous, I was actually starting to look forward to the film coming out this year but to wait another five months? What if they have it done filming this summer? Couldn't they release it in summer of '08 instead of '09?

They did this once before.

It was called STV.

We got paper cutouts of shuttles coming toward camera as they "landed" on planet's surfaces.

Yeah. Let's do THAT!

You would have hated being a fan back in 1974 after TAS ended.

"God" in heaven, why would you mention that abomination (the only Trek I consider non-canon) in connection to what could be a wonderful rebirth?

70+ decks...
Hokey grav/jet boots used only for a punchline...
Bad (Scotty head-whackingly bad) "jokes"...
Baked beans...
Semi-naked, 55+ year-old Uhura
Sybok...

<shudder>
The horror...
The horror....

Remember when the final episode of Enterprise was aired? That was May 13 2005, years ago. by contrast, this movie is coming out in a year, singular, plus a couple of months. So in-between the two products you're well over halfway there. Think of it like that.

You know this sorta thing lives on hype... granted star trek is star trek and all of us losers will go and see it without our wives regardless... but the "hype" within the non-trek community will die quickly... I'll spend my money on Indiana Jones and Batman and Iron Man and the new Bond... I've lived without trek for this long I think I'll manage with all the crap coming out this year.

They can do what they want, like MadBaggins, I've given up caring about it.

No. Why, was the series canceled or something?

You don't have to care about it MadBaggins. Hell, it would be pretty insane to be in a lather of expectations for 15 months. You'd have to go to the premier in a straitjacket or something!

Some young ones might be dead by then too, but thanks for trying to cheer us old folks up.

Wait a minute-you are kidding aren't you? I hadn't noticed.

Paper shuttles? I mean, the whole male bonding thing made me wretch. Uhura fan dancing was totally unnecessary.

Yep.

My grandmother used to play that card on my dad all the time... "you should do this for me because I could die any day and then you'd be sorry." Then, my dad died of a heart attack, and my grandmother outlived him by about eight years.

Any one of us could die tomorrow... hell, ALL of us could die tomorrow! (Anybody watching for rogue asteroids??? Mutant viruses??? Britney Spears' comeback tour???) So the claim that "some folks might die" is ludicrous. OF COURSE SOME PEOPLE WILL DIE. Hell, I might die before then.

But ya know what? Ultimately, it hardly matters... life's full of more important stuff I ALSO haven't done. And based upon what little influence this movie will have on my life... I think I'd prefer to never get to see the properly done movie than to see a poorly done "rush job" flick right before I die! :D

Wow. It suddenly occurred to me that I could probably skip this movie altogether, and on my death bed, it would never occur to me to even regret missing it! What am I doing here?!?

Why else would they delay, uh because they realize it sucks perhaps. Oh they're in trouble already. So they're gonna try to throw some more money at it maybe. That should help. The entire three years of TOS probably didn't cost as much. Instead of finding someone who can do what Rodenberry did again they went with credentials over superior ability. What's new.

I think that's an unfair and overly pessimistic assessment.

Rather, I'd guess that the writer's strike (remember that?) had an impact on the film. Now that it's over, they can go back and do some further polishing on the script, that they WANTED to do all along but were "forbidden" to do (though I'd be willing to bet that the changes are already "written" in their minds! ;) )

However, you then need to rework the schedule to take into account additional sets, some reshoots, etc... stuff that they COULDN'T "plan for" before the strike was over.

Blame this on the writers' strike, if you need to blame something.

As for me, I'd far rather have a good movie a few weeks later (and it IS just a handful of weeks, realize!) rather than a rush-job which leaves out things which are part of the filmmaker's INTENT.

If it turns out that it sucks, given the full time necessary to make it... then and ONLY then can blame be attributed to anyone! ;)

It has nothing to do with the film itself. The WGA strike left huge holes in the studio's schedules, meaning that 2009's sked is underdeveloped. Moving Trek to May is a business decision. It gives PMount a tentpole franchise, which means that we're going to see a LOT more promotion of the movie.

I know it sucks to wait this long, but in the long run this is probably a good thing. You don't put a film into your summer sked unless you think it's going to do very well. Christmas Day was probably not a good time to open a film anyway, but that first week in May is a sign that TPTB think that they have a potential blockbuster on their hands.

You just have to think like a studio executive, in which case all you need to consider is how to make the most money you can...

Last I checked: "credentials" are all about "superior ability" that's why people build them up so they can prove they have the superior ability to get the job done.

This delay isn't specific to "Star Trek" which is one of many folms that have been shifted around. Why are some people (oh the usual suspects...) reading this as if someone at Paramount has expressed a lack of confidence? More so since they put it in the "Summer Blockbuster" period - if anything that speaks volumes of confidence in *this Trek movie*.

Sharr :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

My enthusiasm for cruising around for news has certainly waned, but I'm no less excited about the project than I was yesterday. It looks cool, it's only delayed by five months and life goes on.
