It might be true that if GR didn't include the standard bare knuckled fist fight in the second pilot, there might have been no Star Trek at all. As far as the truth is concerned, and incidently why we run Twilight zone marathons every new year, is that at least TMP tried to have some deeper meaning. The only thing I learned from TWOK was Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Who's "we", are you an executive at the SciFi channel?
And ah TMP attempt at "deeper meaning" isn't so deep - trust me no one's a better person for having watched Ilia and Decker get all ascended with the great machine. If you think TMP is telling you anything of worth you need to broaden your horizons
Oh and Pike assaulted a Talosian to make a point gave in to his primal urges even threatened to phaser their heads off... so the whole standard fight was there from the start.

[Like I said, TMP tried. Just because it didn't reach it's goal doesn't mean it was going in the totally wrong direction.

Fpr me, to this day, the only thing ST:TMP tried to do was to spend 40 million dollars re-making a YV series script originally shot in 1967 (aka The Changeling) with a slightly modified ending.![]()
All of this encapsulates the stuff of high drama, of entertainment-and I'm in the entertainment business first. It's all right to include a pot of message, but that's not the key ingredient of wide readership.
