I can either get TNG or DS9

DS9! Especially since you say:

I thought I was only a fan of serials (like LOST)
A Lostie will like DS9 better than TNG, which really hasn't aged well.

IMO a Lostie would enjoy Babylon-5 more than DS9, its Mira Furlan's best known role.

I like DS9 its got good episodes and great actors but IMO its too dark, too much angst and warlike. Star Trek TNG is much closer to Roddenberry's vision and a much better folow on to TOS

I've only seen TOS and none of the movies. Which one should I get? I thought I was only a fan of serials (like LOST), but then I got hooked on TOS, so I'm really torn between which one I should get.

Well, you can get each individual season from each series for $34.99 here:

So, you can save $75.00 on one series, get two seasons of the other, and still have enough for a sandwich!

Oh, and this code might still save you another 10%: EVW6WK7W (10%)

Good luck. Let us know what you do.

I just tried it and it works. TNG $252.59 and FREE shipping. DS9 $247.79 and FREE shipping.

I would vote for TNG for the reasons that have been stated although if you start right off with Season 1 you'll probably think we steered you wrong. TNG doesn't really get going until Season 3. If you have Spike TV they are showing the first season of DS9 every weekday at 2:00 in the morning.

I know this doesn't really answer your question, but get both. They're outstanding series, though I'd probably skip the first season of TNG because of it's identity crisis. If you can only afford one at a time, then get TNG first because it was produced first. DS9 then spins off from the series' 6th season.

Screw it, buy both. I could see if you had to choose between, say, TNG and ENT. I'd automatically go with TNG. But TNG AND DS9?? We're talking Trek's ABSOLUTE BEST here.

You don't really need heat and light for three months, do you? As for light, it stays daylight til 8:30pm now, and as to heat, well, this IS July.

And of course, food is overrated.

Trust me, buy both.

At those prices, I'd say neither.

Indeed.

Shop around and find DS9.

You should be able to find a full collection at around 250.

Seriously, 300+ bucks is ridiculous, you can buy them separate for that price.

Uh, no light equals no electricity equals no tv equals no Star Trek. So yes, he DOES need light.

Both are classic Trek, of course. But if you choose TNG, skip the first two seasons entirely. They're crap, pretty much.

And if you go with DS9, skip the first three seasons and the first half of season seven. Also crap.

If you like serialized drama, DS9 wins over TNG.
If you like drama and friction between the characters (like TOS's Spock/McCoy) over the "perfect" everybody gets along with everybody of the 24th humanity of Trek, go with DS9 over TNG. The interaction with the Bajorans and Ferengi help keep things interesting.

Oh yeah. In my zeal to express my equally passionate love for TNG and DS9, I guess I forgot the particulars.

TNG has aged quite well, I've seen him first just a few years ago, and it was great.
And I am a big Lostie too, and I don't really like DS9.

Maybe he will enjoy DS9 more, maybe not.

TNG is not so serialized, but either is TOS. TNG has more interesting (episodic) sci fi stories than DS9.
The main characters get along most of the time, not always. But TNG has some very interesting characters, and villians.

Go DS9. I think it had a very strong cast, a great over-arcing story, and a great additional perspective on the Federation. TNG wasn't bad, but I could never quite get on it. If you like the serialised story that focuses and expands on a handful of cultures, go DS9. If you like alien culture of the week, go TNG.

I think it would make the most sense to get TNG first since alot of characters and alien races from DS9 are introduced in TNG. Then when you finish TNG you can get DS9!

I got DS9 on ebay because the coupon for borders didn't work. Hopefully I will get it soon. Thanks, everybody.
