I've only seen TOS and none of the movies. Which one should I get? I thought I was only a fan of serials (like LOST), but then I got hooked on TOS, so I'm really torn between which one I should get.

The Seasons 3-7 story arc is an excellent reason to purchase the whole package.

IMHO, TNG has a couple outstanding seasons (3,4,5) that may warrant individual purchase, but DS9 is more consistent.

A Lostie will like DS9 better than TNG, which really hasn't aged well.

DS9 is the better series, but you need to see TNG to set the stage for a lot of what happens there. Start with TNG. For both series, the firsts eason is tough to get through, the second gets better, and by the third they are very good. Also, in both cases, the 7th season is not quite as good.

Personally, I'd go with TNG. DS9 would be my next choice, but NextGen sets the stage for it.

TNG is very good. DS9 is brilliant. If you're a fan of serialised drama then there's not really much of a choice to make IMO.

DS9 is a far, far better show IMO and actually much more like TOS than TNG is, despite being semi-serialized. Go with DS9.

I agree with the guy who said Netflix... but if you're determined to "buy before you try" I'd say go with TNG first for the same reason others have stated... TNG (re)builds the Trek universe, DS9 fills it out. That said, DS9 does indeed "hold up" better over time and I'd hate to think of you getting frustrated with the first couple of shaky seasons of TNG and giving up on it. You really need to see both. You can live without Voyager and not really have missed all that much, but TNG and DS9 are more or less vital.

^^^Hear, hear. If you've never seen either, Netflix is the way to go, especially when the series start to overlap. And I would also say start with TNG and then start saving for DS9 for all the reasons given above.

Of course the best option is to watch everything (including Voyager) in original broadcast order. I'm sure someone can direct you to a list to slavishly obey.
