I am watching DS9 for the first time (some observations)

I'm about 6 episodes into a DS9 rewatch. It's been about 5 years since I finished my last complete watch through of DS9. I agree with the OP that DS9 puts DSC to shame. But I have one big question. Season 1 has several episodes already with aliens from the other side of the wormhole. I don't remember if this was addressed later when the Dominion conflict came. Did the Dominion conquer all these worlds? Or did the writers simply forget them?

They seemed to be minor powers. The Dominion might have tolerated them. The Dominion didn't extend to the wormhole until around season four during the build up toward the war iirc. Also, some of them may be from regions well away from Dominion space.

Or they had no interstellar travel making conquering them superfluous and unnecessary if they were on worlds with limited resources. The ones who could travel - always saw them as part of the Dominion where their stories in Season 1 had no opportunity for that fact to actually arise.

For example, the aliens hunting Tosk were probably not ignored as they were already part of the Dominion. It's just that the Dominion doesn't care about what they do for hobbies ... and I think this holds up all the way to Season 2 to the planet making negotiations with the Ferengi that outright said they are part of an organization called "the Dominion".

I just re-watched two episodes, Civil Defense and Defiant. Neither were great episodes by DS9 standards, but I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Part of what made DS9 so great is how they were able to assemble an ensemble cast of top tier talent. The actors who played Sisko, Kira, Dax, Odo, Quark, Dukat, Garak, etc. were all phenomenal.
