I am updating the ST Encyclopedia

No offence, but isn't Memory Alpha a bigger and more detailed Star Trek Ency than any one person could ever create?

Memory Alpha is run by a bunch of twits and jackholes. I say good luck on your venture and as a fellow encyclopedist (I am doing starships, stations, and shuttlecraft from all the books, video games, comics, live-action, and cartoon) It is a lot of work, but fun.

Doing the books, video games and comics references for Alpha? Or Beta?

^Nope, he's already (and rightly) intergrated the 2233 Kelvin uniforms into his prime-universe uniform chart.

But I am skeptical of a Trek ency seen through one man's eyes. There are enough people on this board alone who insist the nuEnterprise is the same size as the original version and the gigantic brewery engine room, shuttlebay and deck behind the bridge are all "mistakes" to be ignored somehow (ditto the big Kelvin), and produce comparison charts to that effect. It's not representative of Star Trek, it's representative of Person X's imagination. Ditto billions of other Trek things over the decades.

James Dixon's crazy timeline is a perfect example: An amazing amount of work and love went into it, but so much has been altered, changed and ignored (for example, Enterprise is an "alternate timeline" seperate to TOS in Dixon's universe, TOS is set ~5 years earlier than the Okuda timeline) that it's not of much use getting anything other than a vague idea of when events in the Trekverse "happened".

I originally started with Alpha, but after the whole its not specifically reference on screen debate about Starship class names, thats when I decided that they were so tightly anal, an ant wouldn't want to crawl up it.

So I went to Beta, there is this one editor at the time, who kept on modifying on what I was doing for every article, and he was such an ass about it that I did complain to a Captain dude, who essentially told me that I need to grow a pair, so I stopped contributing.

I wasn't copying and pasting Memory Alpha or other articles and just replacing the ship name, I actually did the research into the vessel and tried to find the appropriate image, but I guess it wasn't good enough for them, especially when I was the only to put comic images of various vessels. So now I am just doing it on my own.

I, generally, stay away from RPGs because they really mess things up in ways of ship naming, ship's ncc, and just ship info.

Exactly. If continuity fans are going to play by the same "rules" they have for four decades pretty much everything we see in the pre-credits sequence of JJTrek has to be integrated into the TOS-"Enterprise" continuum.

It is that simple. It's not like the dedicated and imaginative folks who've published professional Trek reference material in the past decades haven't managed to include and make a little sense of huge amounts of inconsistent data from TOS itself and the follow-on versions.

This new encyclopedic blog looks like an enormous undertaking and is clearly a labor of love. Having this kind of thing created by someone who's more open minded than the folks behind a couple of the better-known long time Trek websites is a good and hopeful thing for the continuance of fandom itself.

Oh - and I can't believe that vBulletin's spell-checker thingie flags both "blog" and "vBulletin" as misspellings. Good luck with that, guys.

Shouldn't Security/Engineering be "Operations". I dont think Rand was an engineer or a security officer. Though on the other hand Uhura could be both.

Rand was an enlisted crew member, but I agree, that red should be Engineering/Technicians/Security/Tactical/General Starship Operations.

IIRC, the weapons officers we saw in TOS wore gold (in Balance of Terror).

That seems to have been consistent on the Kelvin; the tactical officer (named in the credits) wore command blue.

Red = Support Services, or simply Services. That covers the gamut from Engineering and Security to Administration and Supply.

Why the phaser crews fell under Command and not Services could've been decided by something as simple as a coin toss back at Fleet Ops. Kind of like why the Air Force wears blue uniforms; the chief of staff at the time liked blue.

...and have a new blog to showcase random excerpts. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Are you going to pull a Bob and pretend Trek 09 didn't happen?

I am including some of the material from ST XI in this work, but only those facts that apply to the "prime" universe.

I do this not as a slight to ST XI, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but just so that I can actually have a hope of ever finishing! It seems likely that this film will launch a new series of movies and who knows what else down the road. And I started integrating everything together before XI came out.

So, my Encyclopedia will include the first 40 years of Trek, give or take a few entries for XI. Where an entry has a counterpart in the Trek 2.0-verse, I am marking it with a TOS Command star. I imagine that once I finish this great work, I'll develop a Trek 2.0 Encyclopedia, perhaps in a different (interactive?) format.

Sadly, this does repeat the problem of having 2+ volumes to peruse, but otherwise, I'll never be able to make a finished work as long as there is new Trek.
