I am updating the ST Encyclopedia

^Nope, he's already (and rightly) intergrated the 2233 Kelvin uniforms into his prime-universe uniform chart.

But I am skeptical of a Trek ency seen through one man's eyes. There are enough people on this board alone who insist the nuEnterprise is the same size as the original version and the gigantic brewery engine room, shuttlebay and deck behind the bridge are all "mistakes" to be ignored somehow (ditto the big Kelvin), and produce comparison charts to that effect. It's not representative of Star Trek, it's representative of Person X's imagination. Ditto billions of other Trek things over the decades.

I am doing my best to produce an objective work, based as much as possible on the Okuda's as-official-as-possible Encyclopedia and Chronology. I may have a little opinionated aside here or there, in a notes section, but the main entry reflects what was shown on screen.

I happily acknowledge that all of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and all 11 films occurred within the Trek universe...even the horrible ones. The closest that I feel I come to controversial is treating the events of "These are the Voyages..." as a holonovel, rather than *historical fact*. Some may disagree, but I think it's fair, given that we did not see the *actual* events , but rather a holographic recreation.

And of course, if you come across any errors or omissions, I readily invite you to point them out to me. My goal is to have a fully accurate updated Encyclopedia. If I have to go back and edit something, I've left myself some wiggle room in the layout for just that purpose. And I also have a running list of edits to be made to what I've already done; little things that jumped out at me when copyediting later in the alphabet.

So keep your eyes open and let me know. Thanks.

No offence, but isn't Memory Alpha a bigger and more detailed Star Trek Ency than any one person could ever create?

As a wiki, Memory Alpha is updated by anyone who cares to try. And while there is an immense number of great entries there, I've come across some errors from time to time.

I am keeping the MA staff in the loop with my latest finalized entries, and they are updating their site as they see fit.

Also, MA doesn't have my custom illustrations ;)

...and have a new blog to showcase random excerpts. Check it out and let me know what you think.

The Kelvin uniform you've identified as science/medical is worn by the alien lieutenant on the bridge, who was described in promotional materials as a security officer. The uniform color can be seen in the "Aliens" feature on the DVD.

Y'know, I watched and rewatched, freeze-framing, over and over, the Kelvin sequences of XI. In so many places, the lighting is influenced by the ship's red alert status, and it's hard to make out exactly what colors there are. I actually only found one person that I was sure was wearing the gray sciences uniform. But now that you mention it, I suppose I could go back and check out the special features disk. There may be something I missed...

As to the continuing discussion of what Engineering/Security should be called, I do like the sound of the "services" division. Anyone else have a better suggestion? I'm also open to relabeling "Command" as helm and navigation personnel (and the like) aren't necessarily in positions of authority. Send some ideas my way!

It looks great! Keep up the work and updates and I will certainly follow.
I'm hoping for some Enterprise entries... :D

I would prioritize, completing the 24th century entries, then updating the 22d century ones.

Actually, the writing portion is pretty much done. I am proofing and doing some minor editing as I'm laying everything out and adding photos, but the text is 98% complete.

However, with there being so much information, plus finding the right images and in some cases, drawing my own illustrations, it takes a while to put everything together.*

Hmmm...I updated, corrected and flesh-eut the "Chronology"; a 3-year project I finished up a few months ago (and still tinkering with the 700 pages here and there). I posted in Gen. Trek that I had done this and was largely shut down with people saying I had wasted my time, that print was dead, etc. Maybe I should have posted here. I, for one, will always prefer a book over any kind of E-info. Nothing like having something tangible in your hands. I applaud anyone who undertakes this kind of undertaking.

Thus I'll ask again, in here this time - is there any outlet for my work? fan-based or otherwise (i'm not web-site savvy) If the Okudas, Paramount and TPTB are loosening up a bit on Trek non-fiction, I would love to have jump on such an opportunity. It was a labor of love and personal gratification, but I would really like to share it with people who would appreciate it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was actually one of the recipients of an earlier draft of your work (round about March '08). What I've seen so far is a great piece.

I love it so far, I especially love the areas where you have an entry in Klingon or Jem'Hadar font (Vulcan will be interresting to see). I like your interpretation of the ENT finale. There are very few episodes of Trek I have a big problem with, that one is tops in my list.

Good man!

Looking forward to tomorrow's entry! I hope that the Trip entry is faithful to "The Good that Men Do" and onward.

This remarkable project is bookmarked. I think you'll gain a considerable following, Cronos6939.

;)

Edit: Oh, I love all the Intrepid entries!

Unless you've got sufficient pull with Pocket Books to have Mike Okuda bumped from any future updates (which reportedly are being discussed), then no. You might get away with an online version for a while, but don't be under the illusion that its by anybody's blessing; they just haven't gotten around to you yet. In fact, if you actually call your project "The Star Trek Chronology", expect a cease-and-desist letter from CBS/Paramount in fairly short order.

No, they haven't loosened up.

I seem to remember a fake Star Trek Ency in England in the late 90's. They used the mind-blowing tactic of omitting the word "Star" from the title
I never picked it up, because I had the real one, and the fake was about half as thick, had no pictures and a huge font.

Why the phaser crews fell under Command and not Services could've been decided by something as simple as a coin toss back at Fleet Ops. Kind of like why the Air Force wears blue uniforms; the chief of staff at the time liked blue.

Easy:

The folks who operate/fire the weapons wear gold (command/tactical operations). The folks who maintain/repair the weapons wear red (support/engineering/ordnance). In the Army I was one of the guys who worked on missile warheads and part of the Ordnance branch. The folks who used the missiles I helped maintain were part of the Artillery branch.

When do you think it will be completed, and how large will it be?

It will be a while yet. And it will be huge.

I first started this project about 5 years ago, though that included scanning the old encyclopedia, running it through OCR, and editing that; rewatching all of Trek to pick up some things the Okudas missed; and writing brand new entries for DS9 season 7, VOY seasons 5-7, all of ENT, and NEM. I've also had to gather scores of pictures (plus photoshopping where necessary) and have even developed a number of new illustrations myself (plus the research for all of those!).

I started integrating everything into InDesign, plus doing a final copyedit on the text, about 16 months ago. Since then, I've made it to the point where I'm about halfway done... not counting some additional errors/omissions I've found the need to go back and fix later.

And in the midst of all of that, life happens. Since starting, I have switched jobs twice, started a modest freelance side-business, moved twice (and am soon moving into my first house), and gotten married.

A-M of my finished* PDF is a little over 700 pages, and what I have put together of the Appendices are a touch over 100 pages. So yeah, it'll be big.

I think Pocket Books might have a question or two, what with Mike Okuda talking about doing an update of the print version...

If this is true, I certainly hope that they don't pull the crap that they did with the last "update" (i.e. reissuing the exact same book that we all bought before, but with a hastily and sloppily added "addendum" of about twenty extra pages at the end. I totally do not blame Mike Okuda for this; he obviously was just working with what PB gave him, but IMHO it was a cheap move on PB's part).

If I had to guess, there's so much more information now that the book would have to be at least two volumes now.

That's reason I decided not to buy Encyclopedia 2.3. I already had the original and the hardcover.
