I am on my knees begging all of you...

How can there possibly be any difficulty? Really, give me an example.

"Did you see Star Trek Saturday night?"

"Yeah, they did a great job on the FX!"

"Yeah, when they showed the Romulan ship - wow, the ship looked a lot better than the old ones ..."

"Especially when it fired at the Enterprise!"

"Yeah - the plasma looked really cool!"

"Wait ... plasma?"

"Yeah, and Kirk told Sulu to throw the ship into reverse ..."

"Sulu never threw the ship into reverse."

"Sure he did! And they just barely outdistanced the Romulan weapon!"

"You mean the drill? They parachuted onto that ..."

"Parachuted? They were in space! At warp!"

"No, Pike was flying the shuttle in the atmosphere!"

"Pike? Pike was in a wheelchair .."

"Well, yeah, at the end."

"At the beginning ... but that wasn't the show that was on Saturday, anyway."

"No, it was the one with the Romulan captain."

"Yeah, that's it. But they didn't have any parachutes ..."

"Sure they did! And Sulu had a sword!"

"Well ... yeah ... but that was a different one. Where Sulu had his shirt off."

"He was in a jumpsuit with a helmet and armor! What show did you watch?"

"Star Trek. What show did you watch?"

"Star Trek."

I don't like "nu" either..it's an odd word meaning short for "new"..well why don't they just say the damn word "new" instead of "nu"..have we gotten that lazy?! Geessh!

I'm in the minority on this but I've been taking a cue from the end credits and just using the term "Prime" to refer to anything taking place in the "original" universe. I don't know if that's annoying or not, but it's helped a bit when getting into the whole "ZOMG the original timeline has been ERASED!" discussions.

I like that. Original Trek (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, movies) Trek Prime.
"Current" Trek (ENT, 2009), generic Trek.

"Enterprise" was "gnuTrek".

I said an example where the two people conversing aren't retards. This example, therefore, does not apply.

nuWhatever just presents the typist in an unfavorable light. There are ways to make a clear distinction that are just as short or nearly as short. You can go by creator, first production year, series number, or any other distinctive identifier. If I say 09 Trek, Trek XI, or Star Trek (2009), isn't it immediately apparent which film I'm referencing?

One way or another, you're going to need some way to distinguish it, whether it's called "Nu" or "JJ" or "Abrams" or whatever - not every conversation about Trek is going to be about a specific scene that is unique to either TOS or the movie or TMP or any other series. "Do you like Star Trek?" is a simple question, one you don't have to be a "retard" (can we please stop using that? It's a hell of a lot more offensive than "nu") to ask, and it has several potential answers. "NuTrek" is just online shorthand (I doubt people are saying this in regular conversation, even the geniuses or the psychics) for "the new Star Trek movie/universe created by J.J. Abrams," which is, frankly, both a mouthful and a handful to express. If you're having a discussion about a scene, as in the example you asked for, there are enough common elements between the new film and some episodes of TOS or the other series that you may need to somehow clarify which source you're talking about.

As my teachers used to say, if you have a complaint about how something is done, offer an alternative and don't just bitch about it. What's your suggestion, T'Baio ;) ?

I didn't read through the entire thread, so forgive me if it's been suggested before, but how about calling it "ST-2.0".

I suggest just using the actual word "new" instead of putting nu in front of the word. As in, new Trek instead of nuTrek.

It seems to imitate Hungarian notation, a convention used in Windows and Microsoft apps source code, where a capitalized or camel-case function or variable name is prefixed with an abbreviation of its data type (the data type of its return value in the case of a function). So the prefix nu could stand for "new, unstable."
