I am on my knees begging all of you...

...stop...please stop...with the "nu".

"Nu" anything. Just stop. It's so...I don't know what it is. But there's just something about it, I hate looking at it, seeing it or reading it.

It's so...pretentious and self important and aggrandizing in...some way.

I can't put my finger on it.

I hated it with "nuBSG", but since I was always behind on the episodes, I was never in the forum and rarely had to deal with it.

Please, for my sanity...just stop.

It's so...lame.

This.
:p

QFT.

This brings up a question I've had ever since the Star Trek movie came out. How do we describe things now. I mean with Star Trek (The first one) I never use the initials "TOS" because it's not called "TOS." You watch the show and you don't see "Star Trek: The Original Series" in the title sequence. So with that it mind, with this film we have a lot more confusion. How do we differentiate everything now?

I don't like "nu" either..it's an odd word meaning short for "new"..well why don't they just say the damn word "new" instead of "nu"..have we gotten that lazy?! Geessh!

Maybe, I've always thought on nu to symbolize a somewhat bastardized form of something designed to appeal to a new younger "hip" audience. Probably a bit condescending but not ridiculously so. I first saw it as nuMetal describing bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Korn. It just seemed natural to apply it to nuBSG and nuTrek in a similar fashion.

I suppose we could refer to the old continuity as "Star Trek Prime" rather than adding a special moniker to the new one.

We already refer to the original series as TOS,
I don't. It was called Star Trek and that's what I call it. Each of the spin offs and movies had titles of their own until the recent one. Next Gen, Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, The Animated Series ect...

I think now I tend to refer to the current show by it's name and previous incarnations as "classic" whatever rather than using the 'nu' reference. At least most of the time.

No problem here as I think it's very "junior highish". Like "meh" and all the other stupid internet words that appear here. LOL!

***sorry Pth! I honestly didn't read your post ^^^ before posting mine. :)

I always see it as a sneer. That's my impression. Anyone who actually rates the shows they are talking about accords them their proper name.

Since we're not exactly naming the new universe/timeline in this thread, I wouldn't use words like Alternate Star Trek, or Abramverse or Neroverse Trek. This is a whole new movie (or series of movies). I would just continue with the numeric sequence, e.g., Star Trek XI or Star Trek 2009. To avoid confusion in the future, I wouldn't mind seeing a subtitle included, e.g., Star Trek - Secret Invasion.

What was wrong with STXI?

Exactly. I've always refered to this movie as that. Star Trek is generic and refers to the entire franchise, while nuTrek is not appropriate considering this movie is just the latest instalment to the Star Trek universe. This terminology was not employed on Enterprise, or to any new incarnations of Star Trek.

So, what's left is Star Trek XI (STXI, ST11, etc.), seeing this is the 11th Star Trek movie.

Here's what I have...

TOS
TAS
TNG
DS9
VOY
ENT

TMP
TWOK
TSFS
TVH
TFF
TUC
GEN
FC
INS
NEM
STXI

It seems like a lot of people aren't taking to "STXI" though.
