How Would You Change "Deep Space Nine"?

No, the issue was how often leaders of different empires appeared. Damar was not leader of Cardassia until after Dukat lost his marbles down the turbolift. And as I mentioned in my post, Damar as leader of Cardassia was only on the station in "STATISTICAL PROBABILITIES".

I mean, okay, but Damar was the de facto "vice president" of Cardassia during the occupation arc, so I still think the broad point -- "We saw a lot of major state leaders on the show, so I would have preferred to see the Federation President as a recurring character presence more" -- still applies.

Near the end, probably. Given the size of the fleet he was commanding, and that some of those ship's captains were senior to him.

Agreed.

But there is something that probably gave Sisko authority over all those captains... his position as Admiral Ross' adjutant. It probably grants him a kind of broad authority over certain missions, like Operation Return and the Battle of Chin'toka.

Position seems to override rank. Data is Second Officer, but Troi in season 7 outranked him.

And I know you will hate this example, Oddish... but it also explains why Ensign Harry Kim can order Lt. Baxter to his station in "TWISTED", since he is Operations Officer, a senior officer position.

I don't hate either example. And really, the former is the more irritating, as it indicates a point I have long been asserting: that Data should have been a commander by the 7th season, making the rank issue irrelevant.

Also, regarding the second...
1. Harry didn't order Baxter to do anything.
BAXTER: "Should I report to my duty station?"
KIM: "It might not be a bad idea. Until we find out exactly what's going on, everybody should be on standby."
BAXTER: "I'll round up my security team."

That's not ordering. It's advising.

2. This was early second season. Harry's low rank still made sense at that point.
Ro required about 2-1/2 years to get back to lieutenant. Ogawa required a little over three. Nog needed two, but the Federation was at war. So if Harry had remained an ensign until the third or fourth season, that would have been fine.

I agree about Data... should have been a commander long before season 7, though. Definitely by the time he dies in NEMESIS.

And I see what you mean about Harry, I simply figured it was odd for a Lt. to even ask such a question to an ensign. Though Harry did order everyone in the Mess Hall to stations in "THE HAUNTING OF DECK TWELVE"... can't be certain, but there must have been a juinor lt. or two in there at the time.

I do have another example from VOYAGER... Torres was a junior lieutenant, and Carey was a full one. Yet she is the Chief Engineer.

Another reason why Torres should not have been chief engineer at first. And while it did hurt Carey's character, it hurt B'Elanna's worse: half of her potential overall character arc was over and done in one episode.

What I would do? I'm just spouting off, so these won't be in a chronological, season-by-season order:

-Start Sisko out as a captain. (I love Fireproof's idea here to make him a commodore. I would have saved that promotion until the Dominion War though).
-See more of Sisko's family. They were mentioned but we never saw them.
-Include Kasidy in more episodes. One of the things that gets no complaint from me is how much time DISCO has taken to develop the Burnham-Book romance and while DS9 did a nice job with Sisko and Kasidy, wringing a lot out of their relatively limited screentime together, I wouldn't have minded seeing them together more.
-Would've had Nichelle Nichols on, as either Uhura in a special episode, or in a recast (and recurring) role, a la Brock Peters. She could've played Sisko's aunt or a former commanding officer or something. The Trek lit. idea of Uhura as head of Starfleet Intelligence would've come too late, but that would've been a great role for the character on DS9.
-Brought back Cal Hudson and Maquis and included Ro Laren. If they had to kill off Hudson it would've been more powerful to see than hearing it second hand. Further, it would've been nice to have Hudson in the pilot episode, sending Sisko off to DS9.
-I also like the idea already expressed about bringing back Tom Riker.
-Make Eddington a bigger part of the series to really make his betrayal cut deep. I felt they didn't integrate him well enough into the crew so when he did betray them, I didn't really feel it. Kasidy helping the Maquis cut deeper, even though the series gave it short shrift.
-Weave Section 31 earlier into the series. Give Sloan a better, and more ambiguous end, than he got.
-Include Jake more in the last season. Perhaps make him a Federation News Network correspondent.
-When the Defiant got destroyed, I wouldn't have replaced it with another Defiant-class. I would've gotten a different starship. There were designs from First Contact or the Prometheus-class from VOY that they could've chosen from.
-I've said this before, but I wouldn't have killed off Dukat. I would've left him a blind "Bajoran" beggar on the streets. The idea of him having to beg people he thinks are his inferiors to survive feels like a more just punishment than the Five Caves and it would keep him around if there was a series revival or movie. If there had to be a showdown between good and evil for Bajor, it should've been Sisko vs. Kai Winn.
-Restore Kurn's original identity back. It was a waste of one of my favorite Trek characters.
-Spare the Duras sisters so they could be regular villains on DS9. I think they would've been great for the Klingon War/Dominion War stories.
-Have a Sisko vs. Borg story.
-Do a DS9/VOY crossover. It also would've been nice to have a scene between Janeway and Sisko for the VOY pilot. That said, perhaps slipping Torres, Paris, Tuvok, or Chakotay, in one of the Maquis episodes pre-VOY would've been nice as well.
-Make the Son'a part of the Dominion and include their ships in the post-Insurrection battles. Make the Hunters also part of the Dominion.
-I liked the Breen being in the Dominion, but I think if it had been the Tholians or Gorn it would've packed more of a punch. Granted the special effects might not have been that great, but the history of those two species would've meant more for them to be part of it.
-Have the Tzenkethi on the series.
-Like others have said, include more TNG people at Worf's wedding. I also wish we had gotten a resolution to the Worf/Troi relationship on DS9.
-Include the Enterprise-E in the Battle of Cardassia.
-For Mirror Universe, I definitely would not have the last one, "Emperor's New Cloak", but I was okay with the rest of them. That said, I would not have gotten rid of the Terran Empire. (I like what recent comics have done that keeps them around, but they are weak and hemmed in by the Klingons and Cardassians). And the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance didn't quite work for the Mirror concept because they largely behaved like the prime reality.

I like these 2 a lot:
-Make Eddington a bigger part of the series to really make his betrayal cut deep. I felt they didn't integrate him well enough into the crew so when he did betray them, I didn't really feel it.

I've thought this as well, especially since they had Primmin as a similar character in season 1. My thought would be to replace Primmin with Eddington and build him into a semi regular like Garak up until season 4. His gradual switch to the Maquis, especially the causes, would have made for a few interesting episodes. For the Cause onward could stay the same, but it would be a more interesting arc in my opinion.

I'm not sure if I posted in this thread or not, but some ideas I do have:

1. End the Dominion War with 3 episodes to go in the series. I wanted to see the aftermath and if Bajor would join the Federation

2. Don't make Rom Grand Negus. I understand why they did it, but I still think it was dumb.

3. Lose the last 2 mirror universe episodes. They were diminishing returns at that point.

4. Sisko should have talked to Jake, not Kassidy. They dropped the ball on the Jake/Ben relationship in the later seasons.

Another thought came to mind. Bald Sisko should've been earlier.
Avery Brooks would have agreed with you. He was contractually obligated to shave his chin and grow his hair during the first three seasons of DS9. Later on, they let him look the way he wanted to look.

As a longtime "Spenser for Hire" fan, it took me some time to get used to seeing Hawk in a Starfleet uniform. ;)

That’s why I couldn’t take him seriously in the later seasons. I mean, they put Hawk on a super warship and did relived WWII. Also the Prophets, what, raped his parents? The ones who didn’t learn about linear time until he met them.

Hair or bald would have been fine, hair and full beard the same, but Hawk was too much.
