You forgot the three most important words from the end of your pitch: "High jinx ensue."I just envision a spin-off called "Mudd and Maude, Love Space Style!" where Bea Authur stars as Stella Mudd along with Roger Carmel in a dark sitcom of love gone universal. Stella tracks Harcourt down and re-unites with her estranged husband. And he thought it was bad living on a planet with 500 Stella replicant androids - now he back with the real one and she is none too happy he skipped out on her.
What I found interesting when watching Mission: Impossible all the way through last year was that there wasn't a gradual shift from the 60's to the 70's style, the new decade suddenly hit the show like a brick wall with very little transition in its fourth season (or the one after Trek finished), to the point that it almost feels like a drastically different show stylistically. One that can only be called "Funky". Considering they were stablemates I'd have expected a tonal shift for Trek as well, at the very least musically.
I would sell my soul for a TV like that.Must I?

The joke has lost its humour for awhile now.Imagine the following fourth season scene...
KIRK: Spock, what's your analysis?
SPOCK: It's a most groovy planet, captain.
KIRK: Well Bones, I guess we'll just boogie on down there.
MCCOY: I dig that, Jim. Shake your booty out of that chair, then.
KIRK: Scotty, we need you to truck down to the Transporter Room and beam us down.
SCOTT: Captain, I'm not jivin' you when I say the Transporter isna worrrking.
KIRK: Don't be a bummer, Scotty. You said it'd be fixed by the time we reached orbit.
MCCOY (annoyed): Well, can't you get one of your funkadelic engineers to fix it?
SCOTT: It's a heavy job, doctorrrr....
UHURA: Will you honkeys put a sock in it, please? I'm trying to monitor these righteous hailing frequencies!
KIRK: Let's not get jiggy, now.
UHURA: Yeah, listen to The Man!
I could go on, but no point in making your eyes bleed more...
No.If Trek had continued into the seventies, would the show have become more adult-oriented, with "swinging" behavior, recreational drug use, and so on?I would sell my soul for a TV like that.
Kor
I wonder if Majel Barrett would have kept her hair dark like she did in the final episode (Turnabout Intruder)?
Yes, this is basically what I was talking about. It was an abrupt change, possibly because TV resisted the shifting styles for a little while.Same thing happened with The Brady Bunch, really. If you look at the first season (1969-70) and then the second season (1970-71), they're vastly different in terms of style and music and tone.
The '70s roared in with change! Star Trek would have changed too, at least somewhat.
That's an interesting thought. When did Doohan grow his mustache IRL? He's clean-shaven in circa-1969 pictures I've seen of him and also in the 1971 movie Pretty Maids All In A Row.If Star Trek would have continued into the 1970s,my main image is of William Shatner and James Doohan having very long sideburns. Maybe Scotty would have also grew the mustache.
I doubt the producers would've seen any point to doing that. All it really does is mess with the format and make the viewers start to question why these people have higher ranks but are still doing the same jobs.I always wondered about promotions after season three... With Scott and McCoy promoted to commander, perhaps Sulu and/or Uhura to Lt Commander and Chekov to Lt, and maybe even Kirk to commodore.
Oh, right. I remember seeing a picture of him sporting the beard in one of David Gerrold's books about Trek. So I guess Scotty would've just had the bushy sideburns, then.He grew a short beard around the mid-70s. He shaved it off for ST-TMP, but kept the mustache.

My goodness I never noticed that.

When I first saw TMP Scotty looked so different to me. After Wrath of Khan and the weight gain Scotty from TMP looks very similar to TOS Scotty(just with a mustache). He is still relatively thin.Oh, right. I remember seeing a picture of him sporting the beard in one of David Gerrold's books about Trek. So I guess Scotty would've just had the bushy sideburns, then.
I remember that when 9-year old me first saw TMP, Scotty looked so different I thought they'd recast him! Now when I rewatch the film, he doesn't look significantly heavier or greyer than he did in TOS. He just looks like Scotty with a mustache.![]()
