How would the look of TOS have adapted to the 1970s?

Would the look of the 1970s have worked on TOS?

  • Yes! It would've been interesting to see TOS adapt to the new decade.

  • No! The 70s were ugly, and it would've changed the look of TOS too much.

I just envision a spin-off called "Mudd and Maude, Love Space Style!" where Bea Authur stars as Stella Mudd along with Roger Carmel in a dark sitcom of love gone universal. Stella tracks Harcourt down and re-unites with her estranged husband. And he thought it was bad living on a planet with 500 Stella replicant androids - now he back with the real one and she is none too happy he skipped out on her.
You forgot the three most important words from the end of your pitch: "High jinx ensue."

DISCO TREK THE FUNKY GENERATION (1975)

To quote Kirk from TWOK... "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

What I found interesting when watching Mission: Impossible all the way through last year was that there wasn't a gradual shift from the 60's to the 70's style, the new decade suddenly hit the show like a brick wall with very little transition in its fourth season (or the one after Trek finished), to the point that it almost feels like a drastically different show stylistically. One that can only be called "Funky". Considering they were stablemates I'd have expected a tonal shift for Trek as well, at the very least musically.

Same thing happened with The Brady Bunch, really. If you look at the first season (1969-70) and then the second season (1970-71), they're vastly different in terms of style and music and tone.

The '70s roared in with change! Star Trek would have changed too, at least somewhat.

Imagine the following fourth season scene...

KIRK: Spock, what's your analysis?
SPOCK: It's a most groovy planet, captain.
KIRK: Well Bones, I guess we'll just boogie on down there.
MCCOY: I dig that, Jim. Shake your booty out of that chair, then.
KIRK: Scotty, we need you to truck down to the Transporter Room and beam us down.
SCOTT: Captain, I'm not jivin' you when I say the Transporter isna worrrking.
KIRK: Don't be a bummer, Scotty. You said it'd be fixed by the time we reached orbit.
MCCOY (annoyed): Well, can't you get one of your funkadelic engineers to fix it?
SCOTT: It's a heavy job, doctorrrr....
UHURA: Will you honkeys put a sock in it, please? I'm trying to monitor these righteous hailing frequencies!
KIRK: Let's not get jiggy, now.
UHURA: Yeah, listen to The Man!

I could go on, but no point in making your eyes bleed more...

If Trek had continued into the seventies, would the show have become more adult-oriented, with "swinging" behavior, recreational drug use, and so on?

I would sell my soul for a TV like that.

The joke has lost its humour for awhile now.

No.

If Star Trek would have continued into the 1970s,my main image is of William Shatner and James Doohan having very long sideburns. Maybe Scotty would have also grew the mustache. I wonder if Majel Barrett would have kept her hair dark like she did in the final episode (Turnabout Intruder)? The others I do not see much change since I am talking about the series going until 1971 like it should have.

My goodness I never noticed that.

I always wondered about promotions after season three... With Scott and McCoy promoted to commander, perhaps Sulu and/or Uhura to Lt Commander and Chekov to Lt, and maybe even Kirk to commodore.

Yes, this is basically what I was talking about. It was an abrupt change, possibly because TV resisted the shifting styles for a little while.

I'm watching reruns of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. on Me-TV right now, and you can definitely see a difference between the 1964-65 shows and the ones made later (and not just because they went from B&W to color). Whenever I see behind-the-scenes footage of TOS or The Monkees I'm stuck by how conservatively the producers and crew are dressed. Lots of slicked-down hair, crewcuts, Buddy Holly-style glasses, and men dressed in button-downs & ties. The really casual ones are in polo shirts.

That's an interesting thought. When did Doohan grow his mustache IRL? He's clean-shaven in circa-1969 pictures I've seen of him and also in the 1971 movie Pretty Maids All In A Row.

I doubt the producers would've seen any point to doing that. All it really does is mess with the format and make the viewers start to question why these people have higher ranks but are still doing the same jobs.

He grew a short beard around the mid-70s. He shaved it off for ST-TMP, but kept the mustache.

Oh, right. I remember seeing a picture of him sporting the beard in one of David Gerrold's books about Trek. So I guess Scotty would've just had the bushy sideburns, then.

I remember that when 9-year old me first saw TMP, Scotty looked so different I thought they'd recast him! Now when I rewatch the film, he doesn't look significantly heavier or greyer than he did in TOS. He just looks like Scotty with a mustache. :)

Hmm... kind of like the discussions that pop up in connection with the TOS movies. ;)

Who is to say that sulu and Uhura even make it that far? Like other shows they could have been replaced by other actors.

Well, TMP was the 70s--so..
Now the Moonraker set would have been the Planet Of The Titans Enterprise.

Imagine if the folks behind Space 1999 had done similar sets...

I'm presently watching Season 4 (1969-70) of Mission: Impossible and the main cast changed very little in appearance from the previous three seasons. Peter Graves might be wearing his hair a wee bit longer and Leonard Nimoy's hair looks longer and fuller than Martin Landau's during the previous seasons.

When I first saw TMP Scotty looked so different to me. After Wrath of Khan and the weight gain Scotty from TMP looks very similar to TOS Scotty(just with a mustache). He is still relatively thin.

I've always felt that, from a culture standpoint, the decades run from midpoint to midpoint. What we think of as the 60s music and style really stated in 55 and went to 65. What we think of as the 70s really went from 65 to 75, etc...

Of course, this isn't entirely accurate, either. The truth of the matter is that taste, culture, style, fashion, etc... aren't rigidly bound by the year but grow organically over time. 1969 wasn't much different from 1971. It's not like everyone goes "It's 1970! Quick, let's remodel completely!"
