How to break up after 8 years

I'm not really sure what I was supposed to say, especially since he wasn't really a close friend. I saw him about once/week for tabletop RPG, we IMed on rare occasions, and that was about the extent of it.

If we'd been closer I might have tried to find a way to broach the subject.

I guess I feel like if someone is close enough or outspoken enough to vocalize that sort of thing around you, it's fair game to bring it up with them from a place of concern and support.

I think if I'd felt there was anything positive likely to result from engaging him on the subject I might have done so.

The odds of such seemed rather low when I was surrounded by RPG geeks and he seemed more interested in just taking potshots at his own relationship than seeking counsel.
