Surely Trek can handle some friendly competition.
From itself, essentially. What we're really testing is whether old Trek, in the form of a parody, or new Trek in the form of Discovery, appeals more. I really hope it's Discovery, and I really want to be wowed by it. I'm still fairly positive, but not as hyped as I hoped I'd be at this point. It will come down to whether it comes together on the night.

About a third of the poll respondents are not positive about the show.

And that's on a Trek board.

And two thirds are positive!

Some Trekkies are always mistrustful of new things because we're worried it might affect our enjoyment of the old in some way. A lot of fans were very down on all new Trek projects before they launched - TNG, DS9, Enterprise, the films.

Let's wait for the pilot and see how it goes down.

I'm assuming that Syfy whacked Darkmatter because it assumed that one of these shows, Discovery or The Orville, would be so awesome, that Darkmatter could not compete.

Nothing has turned me off from this show.
And I love all the other series.

The idea of fungus powering an engine is very Star Trek IMO

Exactly where I'd expect them to be. There are Lots of closed minded fans and this BBS is no different as we've all discovered over the last few decades. Only social media makes it different from other periods when they were taking out ads protesting STNG and sending death threats to Leonard Nimoy. A large percentage hate newness and are extremely complacent. Hopefully DSC shakes things up. I'd be extremely comfortable and even happy if the franchise lost a lot of these hangers on and gained new fans like early Berman Trek did.

Discovery has money and pedigree in its corner, but seemingly little of what made Star Trek charming and fun. At least that is the feeling I get when watching the trailers.

Y'know, I think you hit the nail on the head there. I'm still excitedly looking forward for Discovery. But the few things I'm missing most from what we know at this point are "charm" and "fun". Hope we'll get that eventually.

The first few trailers were good, but lately all they've been doing with their clips and trailers and music is shouting "Look at how Star Trekish we are!". Yeah, we know it's Star Trek, it's in the title. If anything, I'm getting more unsettled about the show. I'll be glad when the next two weeks are over with and we can finally make a realistic judgement.

Or, shall I say, "individual" realistic judgements.

Yeah, I'm having hard time thinking of a TNG comedy episode that actually worked.

TNG wasn't great on comedy, because they tended towards farce. That's not to say there aren't funny scenes within episodes (often with Data, or a quip from Worf), but most of their intentionally comic episodes fell flat - True Q (Worf aside), Outrageous Okona (is that supposed to be funny?).

DS9 probably had the easiest time, with humour continually threaded throughout episodes, often with Quark or Odo, or a line from Garak, or Bashir/O'Brien. Even the comedy episodes mostly work - Magnificent Ferengi, Little Green Men, Our Man Bashir, Trials and Tribble-ations. The one major misstep is Profit and Lace.
True Q
Q-Pid
A Fist Full of Datas

OK, I will confess, I think DS9 did do much better comedy episodes, but TOS, TNG, and Voy all had at least a few comedy episodes that worked. I really don't remember the earlier Ent.s to judge it.

Stamets studies Prototaxites stellaviatorae – a species made up of exotic matter found not only in our dimension, but also in a discrete subspace domain known as the ‘mycelial network.’ These subspace ‘shrooms are used in engineering for a mysterious new method of space travel. They are also somehow pivotal to the war with the Klingons."

Jesus Fucking Christ.
Sounds good to me.
Well you've found the right balance of stupidity, awfulness and "fun" in Orville then. I guess you're not watching Discovery. Lol
Wow, I can understand being excited about DSC, but seriously dude, you are taking it to just a ridiculous level. I hate to break it to you, but not everyone is going to like DSC, and not everything about it is the greatest thing to ever happen to TV/streaming shows.

That was actually the one I meant when I listed True Q, I got the titles mixed up. Even if they weren't always full on comedies, pretty much all of the Q episodes had some good humorous moments.

Closed-mindedness goes both ways, you know.

Honestly I do feel what's IN the trailers comes across as more TOS (charcter wise) then TNG; and for me that's a good thing. I just hope the writing staff kept that up, and didn't 'evolve' the characters in utopian-eaque 24th century character types as the series progresses; but we'll see.

I think one of the most eye opening things for me as a fan has been how my perceptions of things have changed in retrospect.

For example, I did not like ENT when it first premiered and watched very little after S1. That said, I finally watched it full-through on Netflix this past winter, and I really enjoyed it. I realized that what was different was that, because of the time that has past, I was able to enjoy it for what it was and not have my heaps of unreasonable expectations and foolish nit-picky concerns clouding me from just "watching" it.

It's really helped me in preparing for DSC with a clear and open mind. I literally just don't give a shit about all the peripheral foolishness that, at the end of the day, just drives me frigging crazy if I think about it too much (Klingon prosthetics, ship designs, aesthetics that don't match The Cage, "what universe is this supposed to be in??" and all that crap).

I've been a fan for 39 years. I have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, periodicals, tech manuals, chronologies, etc. What I've learned is that it's all fun...but it ain't gonna take away from my ability to enjoy a new show for what it is. I'm NOT going to let that happen. I'm going to be clear-headed and enjoy the moment we are all lucky enough to be in (Trek's return!)...and we'll let the merits and entertainment value of the series dictate my reaction from there as the series continues.

But at least that reaction will be pure, and not clouded with completely emotional, foolish concerns that most people seem to drive themselves bonkers with.

I'm excited for it. Yes it looks different then Braga Trek but honestly the formula Bragga was using for Trek was getting very long in the tooth bu the time it went off the air...

You know that Brannon Braga had very little to do with what Trek was like a generation ago - right? So-called "modern Trek" was primarily guided by Gene Roddenberry and Rick Berman.

And he was only showrunner for a couple of seasons of Voyager and three of Enterprise.

And always the "junior partner" by his own accounts. There really is no "Braga Trek."
