Slowly ebbing downward. The Orville has brought back so much of what I've missed about Star Trek.
I would have to say that the last few bursts of information about the series is dampening my spirits a bit. Of course I'll still watch and see how everything works out in the finished product, but there are now so many overwrought details and things being done, along with some ideas that I think should have been shelved.

Yep.

Yep, and I'm surprised to be feeling this way.
I am, too. Very surprised. In fact, Trek has been so much a part of my life that it makes me a little sad. TOS and it's characters were there via reruns or VHS tapes when I had some very challenging times in my life. Trek is a very big part of my life.

I just want some good stories being told. I don't need all this overwrought backstory and things that are getting to the point where it's "Hey, wouldn't it be fun if we did this?"

Just be Star Trek.

So far they've done everything right except put out video and teasers that are not optimal video quality. The theme is getting rave reviews from both fans and media. I would also say twitter anticipation is trending sharply upwards and positive. All that remains is reaction from the 19th premiere and our own from the 24th.

From:

"Lietenant Paul Stamets - the diligent scientist
Stamets studies Prototaxites stellaviatorae – a species made up of exotic matter found not only in our dimension, but also in a discrete subspace domain known as the ‘mycelial network.’ These subspace ‘shrooms are used in engineering for a mysterious new method of space travel. They are also somehow pivotal to the war with the Klingons."

Jesus Fucking Christ.

What the hell. I think they're officially screwing with everyone at this point. Its going to be weird to have a ST thing I loathe more then ST09. I guess every franchise has to hit rock bottom. Star Wars did it with Episode 2, and I thought ST did it with ST09. I was very wrong. Also, having something that is somehow stupider then 90% of the stupid TOS stuff would be impressive if it wasn't frustrating.

I would say I'm getting reasonably excited. There are some quibbles I have with it, but it will be nice to see a big budget television version of Trek, and to be honest I'm going to like seeing the universe through a new creative team compared to the last few series.

As for the Orville comparisons, I don't know what show you guys watched the other night, but I evidently didn't watch the same one. The Orville was...okay. I like the idea behind it, but I feel like it doesn't really know what it wants to be. Its not funny enough to be a straight comedy, but its not serious enough about its own premise that I take it seriously or care. I will keep watching, because I do like Seth McFarlane, and you can tell it's a labor of love project for him, but that is not what I want from my Trek. Don't get me wrong, I want Trek to be fun, and not just this brooding thing ( I love the JJ movies for that reason), but the tone of the Orville is just strange. The jokes don't seem to fit the universe they are in. And its not like a fish out of water situation like Galaxy Quest. Plus the design language being so similar to TNG for me, doesn't make it particularly interesting in that aspect either. I certainly prefer the design work coming of Discovery.

Discovery has money and pedigree in its corner, but seemingly little of what made Star Trek charming and fun. At least that is the feeling I get when watching the trailers.

Well you've found the right balance of stupidity, awfulness and "fun" in Orville then. I guess you're not watching Discovery. Lol

Funny, the recent round of press has heightened the anticipation for me. I'm really excited for Discovery with less than two weeks to go. Can't wait to see what these new characters are like!

Engines powered by SPACE SHROOMS! Fungi that grow into subspace!

uhg.

So do you hate every other Trek series for the same reason? Exotic space life, including many things that can zip through space faster than a starship, and biotechnology have been a recurring theme across every series.

I'm excited for it. Yes it looks different then Braga Trek but honestly the formula Bragga was using for Trek was getting very long in the tooth bu the time it went off the air and it has been 12 years since the last series. I persoally can't wait to see it and see what it brings. In a way I'm actually glad it looks different then Braga Trek not because I didn't enjoy it, but we have many many episodes of that style. I want to see something new and different..

Obviously, these space mushrooms are a failure as we never hear of them again.
