And? That's now news.

It show that the people in charge are pretty unrealistic about Star Trek Discovery chance of "success".

And? There are plenty of non-Star Trek fans out there who will enjoy CBS AA offerings, my grandma and my wife included. So, let us not leap to conclusions based upon HBO's model. And GoT can burn in a wildfire for all I care.

Once again, it shows how unrealistic CBS goals of 4 million new subscribers (or even your goal of 2 million subscribers). Myself, I don't need CBS all access. I have an antennae that gets the local CBS station. The only reason I be even remotely interested is Star Trek. I mention HBO now because it's similar to CBS all access and it's good for comparison. HBO now exist because of GoT. Do you really think ST: Discovery is on CBS all access as a convenience to ST fans.

So you're on team Targaryen?
No, unless they want the show to end too.

So, they shouldn't try? :cardie:

HBO wasn't always HBO, so unless CBS wants to continue living on the antennae, it has to try. I don't care about their projections, because that is what business do. I care about the final product...period.

Secondly, I don't have access to all the data CBS does and I guarantee you that they have people crunching these numbers. It may not be accurate, but what in the entertainment industry is?

According to Variety, CBS struck a deal with Hulu, whereby the network will be part of the latter's live-tv streaming bundle. I am not clear if this bundle includes CBS Access.

I was reading comments to another article. People are paying money for watching programs at Amazon Prime, Acorn (a British tv streaming service), Netflix, Hulu, and cable tv. It is getting expensive to watch what you want when the costs are totaled.

http://decider.com/2017/02/17/what-is-cbs-all-access-the-good-fight/

"The Good Fight" is a show which premiered earlier this year. The premiere episode aired on national tv, then fans of the show had to pay to see the rest of the series on CBS All Access. The show was censored for its national tv appearance. If you wanted the uncensored version, you had to pay for access to the CBS' streaming service.

I am not into sports. It is the sports jargon and how if you were not raised in a house where sports was big it can be daunting to get into sports. It can be very unfriendly. Anyhow, CBS has an arrangement with NFL (the National Football League) whereby NFL games are available on CBS Access. Subscribers to this service can sample the NFL's own network, where they can benefits not available on CBS Access like the ability of replaying multiple angles on a play. I can see this being a big plus for areas where football is huge.

people can spin it whatever way they like, but approx 3 out of every ten trek fans are not positive about the show.
This is the cbs targeted audience, and before the show even airs 30% are less than positive.
I fail to see the positives in that.
Nah, there are more Trek fans than just the people on this site who bothered to vote in this poll.
And I have to imagine the "target" audience is more than just Trek fans. No one could be successful with just them.

*Points at the likes and dislikes on the Star Trek Discovery trailer*

almost 30% of people have a less than positive opinion.

And these people are Star trek fans.
not good
100% of people haven't seen it yet.

Seriously though, when has anything received universal acclaim before anyone has seen it? Especially among a dedicated fanbase like Trek.

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm not overly concerned that a portion of the fanbase won't like Discovery. That's how it always has been with every Star Trek production. You just can't please everyone, it's impossible.

And even though I know it would be better for the franchise if this show was a massive hit, personally, I just don't really care. Sure, I want it to be successful and I want to see Trek thrive, but first and foremost I want Trek that I enjoy. I could live with Discovery being cancelled after one season, if it was the best season of Trek I have ever seen.

Viewing numbers, subscriber numbers, YouTube likes/dislikes and polls on internet message boards are well and good, but ultimately it's CBS' business to care about the numbers, I just care about if it's something I like. When it comes to media I enjoy I'm just egotistical, I guess.

We used to have a poster here, Captain Robert April, who launched a constant trolling campaign of incompetent memes and "it sucks!" posts directed against the Abrams films.

The movies outlasted him.

I heard that the last movie lost 50 million.

They will reboot, before they make another.

(Google, google)

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=startrek2016.htm

It lost 30 million domestically, and got back into the black via foreign sales.

Although receipts minus budget, are not the real numbers on how a film house makes money, so maybe Beyond did lose Paramount 50 million?

(I rarely go into the movie forums, sorry for using such basic information.)

Someone missed the run-up to The Next Generation. Judging by letter columns, TV reports and talking to people... it seemed like seven out of ten hated everything they saw about the show.

Doesn't mean Discovery will be a success, but these numbers aren't really representative of anything at this point.

While I totally agree with you, this is precisely why you see some people so "up in arms" about Discovery. They want what they want...but they're not getting it. So they dial up the hate-o-meter, set the "jump to illogical negative conclusions machine" to maximum, and stomp around actually hoping that it will fail. Because it's not enough that they hate it...it has to fail so their opinion can be justified and they be proven right.

Never underestimate the importance of being right.

Well put and is reflective of my concerns too. (With an added disappointment I harbour personally and that it is set in a past timeline from known Trek).

What's the opposite of a "red" flag? With the exception of "dystopian" -- which you've simply made up-- these are all the signs of an excellent show if you ask me. The first trailer made me nervous but hopeful, but everything we've seen and heard since has all been very encouraging to me. It seems like a solid mix of all the best parts of Trek, from TOS to TNG to DS9, with a modern twist.

Time will tell of course. Could be great, could be terrible, could be anywhere in between. But right now all signs in my eyes point to something I'll enjoy.
