How old were you when you first got drunk?

I guess it was as a toddler...uncle gave me some beer as we were getting ready for a orad trip to grandma's. Normally a no stop trip we had to stop during.

The at 19 to research the part of Honey in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff?"

couple of stupid times after that, but got smart so I don't do that any more.

I dunno, I remember drinking at a new years party 1989/90 so I guess I was 9 for my first real drink, i.e. not shandy, that I remember. If I recall correctly is was a Babycham (perhaps others too). First time I got properly drunk... 17 I think and at age 22 I think I was drugged while out drinking, because I was drunk but fine called for a lift home then I black out until about 5 hours later in hospital after apparently bleeding from my nose, eyes and ears. After that I stopped getting drunk.

Though I had my first drink when I was 14, I'm pretty good at holding liquor. The first time I got completely flat-out drunk was on my 27th birthday. I had to run to the bathroom shortly after blowing out the candles to my cake... and I didn't make it.

Thing is, I'd been walking outside or been out in the sun in general, for most of the day, and it was August. I was dehydrated by the end. Then I stupidly decided to have a drink. Never making that mistake again.

I was 22, on a tropical beach on an island in the Caribbean, during spring break.

Two Merlots, three or four daquiris.

No black out. Still remember the whole night...and the morning after.

It was the memorable night of my 34th birthday party:

I pretty much just drank whatever anyone put in front of me. I believe this was my reaction to the Prairie Fire.

The first time I got drunk, I was probably 19 and in college. I had way too much, since I hadn't ever really had anything to drink, and don't remember some of that night. Thank goodness I had a couple of awesome friends watching out for me to make sure nothing 'bad' happened.

Blacking out is not good, so I try not to let it get that far anymore. And I don't drink to excess but on occassion. Usually it is at a party with friends, and I just drink and don't realize until the night is over how much I have really had :P

Your picture brings back memories of the Goldshlager face. That was my favorite drink back in my drinking days. 107 proof cinnamon schnapps. I used to love giving it to people who had never tasted it before just to see that look on their face.

Depends, they've divided the category from "alcoholism" to "alcohol dependence" and "alcohol abuse", and the criteria has changed over the years, but basically the the fact remains if you consistently HAVE to get drunk (ie: binge drink, but do not get drunk all the time; drink periodically to get drunk even every other weekend)you have a problem because it establishes a pattern..and even these periodic drinkers often HAVE to drink more to get buzzed.

And how would you define the difference between HAVE to and WANT to? Because that's essentially the difference you need to define for a pathological assessment of alcoholism, whether dependence or abuse.

If you're drinking every other weekend with the intent to get drunk, you do not have a problem with dependence. And unless you go home and beat up your girlfriend, don't show up for work the next day or go cutting yourself or something, you don't have a problem with abuse, either.
Exactly. I certainly don't HAVE to drink. I just enjoy it on occasion. Sometimes (maybe once a month) I enjoy drinking enough to get drunk, but I always do it when I know I have nothing to do the following day, and I always make sure I have a place to stay if I'm not in a position to drive home.

I may have drank way too much a few times when I first started in college, but it was doing that actually helped me learn my limits. I'm pretty responsible about it these days.

I don't drive, so me being drunk is not an issue. :)

However what is the point of drinking to the point you are drunk? Where is the fun in that? I got drunk because I has having fun and just had a couple too many. But people get drunk a lot and say it's "social" are nuts. I hardly ever drink and when I do it's a small party and normally a small amount.

Well, I don't "drink to get drunk" as a goal. I had a few beers last night with dinner and didn't get drunk at all.

But if I'm at a party and I'm drinking, I'm probably not going to stop after 2 or 3 drinks. If my drink runs out, I get a new one, and I keep doing that until the party is over. And since my parties are usually awesome and last 5-8 hours, I end up drinking a lot.

Plus, I enjoy being drunk, and so do my friends.

I think "peer pressure" is one answer, even for adults. The last big social gathering I went to, everyone else at the party was actively encouraging me to drink more, despite my saying that my stomach wasn't feeling well and that I don't like to drink too much alcohol. But whenever I said these things they would treat me like I was a huge party pooper and I just needed to relax and have more fun. It was rather irritating. They kept pushing drinks on me and finally I just poured them out in secret to get them to stop bothering me. And these are my good friends!

I think that the reason this happens is that when people are getting drunk at a party, they want to know that everyone else at the party is drunk too, so that the next day nobody will remember the shameful things they did. But I remember!

I resisted because I did not want to drink that night, and usually I don't like having more than one or two drinks at all, but I can see how someone could easily give in to the pressure if people keep trying to convince them that they will have a better time if they keep drinking.

If these are your freinds... find new ones.

If they are your co-workers tell them to fuck off, they can drink more and then they will forget you were a party pooper. :-p
