How old were you when you first got drunk?

I didn't get drunk until I was 23 years old. I then figured out that I could drink most people under the table. It was rather surprising to me considering that I didn't have much interest in it to begin with.

Interesting that it seems to be either really early (14, 15) or late (in their 20s) that people first got drunk, not many in between, around the 16-20 range. Especially because at my high school it seemed like the kids around that age were partying all the time.

I'm 59, and I've never been drunk in my life. Used to have an occasional drink, but in 1988 I started taking meds that don't mix well w/ alcohol, and I haven't had one since.

technically i was two. my dad had left half a beer on a low table not realizing I could pull myself up on it and get at it. I had it gone in thirty seconds.

I am quite surprised by the number of people here who've never been drunk.
I have to say that I'm pretty surprised myself. I know that my problem is that I like the feeling of still being in complete control and feeling "normal" and I have zero desire to feel what the next day feels like after getting drunk. However, it certainly seems like I am on my own amongst the people I know as far as a lack of desire to drink goes. I figured it would be close to unanimous drinkers here.

My worst drunk experience was about 7 months ago after my last day at my job. I'm convinced there was something wrong with my drinks because I had only been drinking for about 30 minutes before I blacked out. I wasn't even tipsy yet, and the next thing I knew it was 5pm the following day, and I was waking up on my couch with my shoes still on. I could not believe how shitty I felt. I seriously think I was poisoned.

Honestly I never understood the point of drinking alcohol to the point of not being able to function...last time I had any alcohol at all it was back in October, I drank 2 bottles of alcoholic cider, and I was cool. If you consistently drink to get drunk even if its not every day then you are an alcoholic...its also horrible for your body's recovery from working out.

No, what you're describing is alcohol abuse, or, perhaps, nothing. Alcoholism, clinically, is defined as your body needing alcohol to function properly. If you consistently get drunk on weekends, you are not an alcoholic. Alcohol abuse is clinically defined as the habit of drinking alcohol in a way that negatively impacts regular social or societal behaviour or expectations.

You can consistently drink to get drunk and not suffer from alcohol abuse or alcoholism. Otherwise, you'd be implying that a vast number of 16-25 years olds are alcoholics.

I was 12. Also the age when I first got high. I was the youngest of three growing up, so I had a lot of rebelling to do.

I pretty much drank my way through high school (15-18), then really got going in the Army. I was stationed in Louisiana, and Mardi Gras was a 12 day blur.

Then at 21 - 22, I pretty much just stopped. Haven't really drank much at all, only socially. I had a glass of wine with dinner tonight, and that was the first drink I'd had in weeks. I'm no T-totaller. I just don't have a desire for it. And when I choose to have something, I like the REALLY good stuff - and I'm way too much of a cheap b*stard to waste any of it!

I'm 20 and I've never gotten drunk solely because I'm very worried it'd replace a previous addiction I had. Believe me, I've considered it during a few instances of intense depression.

Drinking because you're depressed is the worst reason to drink (not to say I haven't done it, though). If you ever want to try alcohol, it's best to do so only in moderation when in a good mood. Otherwise, the risk of using it as a crutch or addiction increases dramatically.

Anyway, the answer for me is 19. It was freshman year of college. I'd considered it before, but never aggressively. A combination of greater desire and greater opportunity changed that.

I'm on some too and a friend is like "you shouldn't drink with those", but I never heard that but shouldn't you not get drunk or drink too much as a general rule?

If I ever get ahold of time travel I'm going to say that to my 1995 self.

'tis one of the reasons I don't drink. That, and like archerguy, I'm a control freak.

Depends, they've divided the category from "alcoholism" to "alcohol dependence" and "alcohol abuse", and the criteria has changed over the years, but basically the the fact remains if you consistently HAVE to get drunk (ie: binge drink, but do not get drunk all the time; drink periodically to get drunk even every other weekend)you have a problem because it establishes a pattern..and even these periodic drinkers often HAVE to drink more to get buzzed.

Yeah, RAMA is just a wimp. And yeah I would say that to his face. Really.:guffaw: I swear.:guffaw::guffaw: I would.:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

You can go on thinking whatever you like...but anyone who has a dependence problem or can't control their drinking, is always going to be more of a "wimp" about alcohol than I am over being able to control my drinking...and that will never change.

Well of course one shouldn't drink too much anyway.

But my definition of "an occasional drink" (or did you think I wrote "an occasional drunk"?) is literally that: I would have one drink in an evening, once every few weeks.

And how would you define the difference between HAVE to and WANT to? Because that's essentially the difference you need to define for a pathological assessment of alcoholism, whether dependence or abuse.

If you're drinking every other weekend with the intent to get drunk, you do not have a problem with dependence. And unless you go home and beat up your girlfriend, don't show up for work the next day or go cutting yourself or something, you don't have a problem with abuse, either.

I had my first drink at age 14. I have gotten drunk maybe 4 times in my life. Unfortunately, at age 19, I got absolutely plastered (2 fifths of Tequila and about 20 beers will do that) and landed in the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

Now, I tend to not drink very often. I just feel to old for that shit anymore :(
