Well, here's your problem; DSC isn't just "seen" as successful, it actually is successful, as in being the primary driver of CBSAA, Netflix (and others), subscriptions. That being the case, all things being equal, and barring some drastic change, it isn't unlikely that DSC will also get a third season. That is how successful the show has, and likely will continue to be, considering the good word of mouth.Because as long as Discovery is seen as successful (and that's arguable, but I'll assume it for this thread), we're never going to get an actual real Star Trek series again. CBS has thrown Star Trek under a bus; IMO, they are using this show to deliberately vandalise it. And to me, that's terribly sad.
I can't just write Discovery off as "not my thing", sorry. I've tried. The show makes me use phrases like "raped my childhood" unironically for the first time ever. I wish it nothing but failure.
All of the aforementioned does not bode well for another TNG/DS9/Voy/Ent style Trek show, which is what it sounds like you may want. I doubt that a spinoff (which may occur once CBS sees the number who unsub after Jan '18) of DSC will look very much different from DSC. That's just the way TV networks operate. So, it might be that the ship you're waiting for has already sailed.
The franchise is moving forward and naturally that means leaving some fans behind.
