How is Voyager buying what they need from other planets?

Most supplies. I bet lots of replicator is used in order to create stuff to trade for things that are hard to replicate. Granted if you want to take a darker look then you could say Janeway allows people to come use the holodeck if said aliens don't have holodecks to create anything from sexual experiences to just adventure stuff. "Voyager" could have been turned into a flying holo-brothel all this time and they simply never showed it on the show because it would be to much for the fans to handle.

As for places that do have holodecks I wouldn't be surprised if they did what they did in that season 1 episode and basically offer people access to Alpha Quadrant art. I mean if a alien species came to earth right now who among us would be curious to check out their art and get a chance to learn more about them as a people?

Trading goods and services instead of the use for money also gives Voyager the opportunity to learn about these alien cultures as well; there's not much exploring a person when buying things. Just buy the stuff and leave, with the Federation philosophy they can create a whole new network where aliens can help them and in return Voyager will help these societies also.

The crews could serve as a research and survey platform, they could do a few cargo runs between home planets and colonies, do ship repairs,... . Their knowledge of Borg instillations and movements might even earn a few coins.

That's true. The ship did seem to have a endless number of shuttlecraft they could be putting to use and since they have Warp they can even leave people behind for a short time since they can catch back up with Voyager via the shuttles. Granted that would be kind of dangerous in that if something happens Voyager would be obligated to turn around and search for the missing people.

I hate to be that person, but can the spelling of this thread's title be fixed please? My proofreading simply won't shut off.
Honestly, if I could fix it then I would.
I feel like an idiot when i look at it since it was me who misspelled the title. Normally I wouldn't do such things but this time I was in a hurry and didn't notice before it was too late.

Anyway, I have contacted Akiraprise who is Moderator on this forum and and we'll see what will happen.

Don't feel like an idiot! I've had to have moderators fix my stuff, too. I can tell your true spelling skills are excellent!

It's a shame Trek never laid out limitations of their replicators. Novels say latinum is valuable because it cannot be replicated but the shows never mentioned or explained it. They never made clear why they can't just build a MASSIVE replicator and spawn 5000 new starships a day.

They never said anything in Voyager about replicating local currency, and only the Kazon explicitly don't have replicators.

This...

CHAKOTAY: Trust isn't the issue. We're getting involved in a situation that's not our responsibility.
JANEWAY: Oh, I'd say we're at least partly to blame. That was Starfleet technology that killed those hunters.
CHAKOTAY: There's nothing inherently violent about holodeck technology. It's what the Hirogen did with it that got them killed.
JANEWAY: How many times have we shared replicators to help people feed and clothe themselves?
CHAKOTAY: Trading technology is part of our life in the Delta Quadrant.
TUVOK:: It has been necessary for our survival.
JANEWAY: Maybe we should have been a little more careful about what we traded and who we traded with. Replicators make weapons just as easily as they do food.
CHAKOTAY: We can't undo what's been done.
JANEWAY: Maybe not. But we can help shut these holograms down before anyone else gets hurt. Now, if there are no more objections, I'd like to get underway.

Remember all the effort they went to, to keep Replicators from the Kazon?
NEELIX: Forgive me, Captain, but are you sure going after the Nistrim is the wisest course of action after what they've already done to us?
JANEWAY: Let me make something very clear. The Nistrim are in possession of Federation technology. That is an unacceptable situation.
NEELIX: Even though all they've stolen is a small computer component?
JANEWAY: That small component has the potential to cause vast problems in this quadrant. You're our resident expert on the Kazon. What do you think the other sects will do when they realise the Nistrim have transporter capabilities?
NEELIX: They'll try to get it for themselves any way they can. You're right. It could alter the balance of power among the sects.
JANEWAY: Exactly. And it is our duty to do everything we can, no matter how dangerous, to stop that from happening.

Hypocrisy!

That's probably the exact reason why they never laid out the limitations - so they could make it up as they go along, without boxing themselves into a corner from a writing perspective.

Well, there was one instance where Voyager traded ten kilotons of dilithium for ten kilotons of bolomite. It was well documented.

I like to think Neelix replicated counterfeit money. :guffaw:

But I think mostly because Voyager was advanced, they were able to trade "knowledge", like specs, blueprints, license keys...

Trek didn't have to lay out limitation for replicators, just watch DS9. Quark was an avid believer of the worth of latinum; if it could be replicator you don't think we would've seen him attempting to replicate latinum in every episode? Because it can't! Common sense would equate to this and a novel or words from a character doesn't need to be stated. It called a visual medium for reason.

You mean the show that couldn't explain how humanity worked without money so they just made jokes about it?:vulcan:

They didn't explain the Latinum thing because they didn't know how, just like explaining how humans did without money.
