How has your spouse responded to Star Trek?

Before meeting me my husband's total exposure to Star Trek consisted of TMP, TVH, and First Contact. Oh, and he is a life-long Star Wars fan and collector so he also refers to the early 1990s as "The Dark Times" when the shelves were full of Star Trek toys and merchandise with nary a Star Wars item to be found.

We met when his roommate, one of my friends, decided to have a Star Trek night wherein my friend and I would get loaded and watch miscellaneous Trek. He decided to watch it with us, and we've been together ever since that night so Star Trek and my hardcore Trekkieness has always been around in the relationship!

After that night he told me he'd always been curious about Star Trek but never did watch it so we've been going through the whole franchise since then. We're on S2 of Voyager and S4 of DS9 now and it has been a great journey watching him develop knowledge and opinions about the shows.

My wife is fairly neutral about the series and will watch the occasional TOS episode or the 2009 movie. She tends to look out for scenes with shirtless Kirk. Apart from that she doesn't follow much.

We both grew up with TOS, both had Trekkie friends, watched all the series together with our friends when they were in first-run. We still throw TOS quotes around at each other all the time. Perfect marriage.

She only watches a show if it has a Beagle i it . . . And looks down on YOU?

In my wife's defense, she does watch shows that don't have beagles in them and she actually likes most of the other shows I watch, including: Family Guy, The Walking Dead (which she seems to like more than I do), Spartacus (I am awaiting her disappointment when she realizes that when I told her its coming back soon I didn't mean New Year's Day), and a Game of Thrones (again, she's eagerly awaiting the new season though she didn't really get into the books.)

My wife is not into it at all. She has watched a couple of the movies and says they were ok, she prefers STIV out of the couple she has seen. As soon as I get a girlfriend I will get her into it. lol

Slightly off-topic, because I've been divorced for almost 20 years. But, as some of you know, my ex and I are good friends. He thinks it's totally hilarious that I've turned into a Trekkie. At the time I left him, neither of us had even seen a single episode. He still hasn't. Poor guy. ;)

I play it every time my girlfriend is here and she likes it. Lately, I've been playing that new "Transformers" that just came out.

My ex didn't like it, but I made her discover Futurama instead.

Although I broke up for other reasons, it was a source of disappointement (only one tv in the flat, d'oh...)

Ah, well. To state the bleeding obvious - it is nice if you and your spouse / partner / significant other can share various likes and dislikes. But, more important (IMO) is that one can RESPECT each other's likes / dislikes - may not understand them, but mutual acceptance / toleramce counts for a lot.

Mr. J is an ENT fan. For the other stuff, not so much. He also likes what I write, reading when time permits. :)

Well, she hit me with "Brain and brain what is brain?" totally out of the blue this morning and has watched ENT, VOY, and half of DS9 (we're in the middle of watching it) with me.

My favorite moment was a few weeks ago when I had laryngitis and could only speak in a raspy whisper. She got my "The ship...out of danger?" quote.

Cool stuff.

True, quite true. ;)

My wife doesn't know that I like Star Trek. No way I'm going back to my parents basement! :guffaw: :shifty:

I converted my boyfriend into a fan. One day we were talking about star trek and he said 'why on earth would I want to watch a bunch of aliens running around in space' I told him to give it a ago as he had never watched it before. He's now watched all of VOY, TNG, DS9, ENT, TOS and all of the movies.

My wife also likes Star Trek - she didn't really watch the show before we got married, but the more she watched the more she liked it. I'm pretty sure Voyager is her favorite series. She's not at the Star Trek convention point yet, but maybe someday... :)

My boyfriend gives me some good-natured ribbing and calls me a nerd, but besides that he leaves me to my Star Trek geekiness. :p
