Always the best crew and ship, always the most exciting missions. Otherwise, the shows that were made would have been about the other best crew and missions, to get the better ratings.

So that's why Roddenberry decided to go with the Enterprise as opposed to the Yorktown in TOS? Ratings?

As the U.S.S. Enterprise is the flagship vessel of the Federation and Starfleet, I'm inclined to believe that her crew may actually be the best or well trained, relative to others. It could be, of course as others have said, the Enterprise may happen to be in the right place at the right time.

The 1701-A was a different deal. Kirk almost certainly got anybody he asked for. And most people would consider it an honor to ship out with Jim Kirk. So that ship had some of the very best of Starfleet aboard.

I don't know if I fully agree with this part. Mostly, okay. But there would have to be some people who would look at an unchanging command crew and see no room to move up.

Then again, if that person were patient, they would see that command crew was aging and close to retirement, and might wait them out. So maybe you're right...
Moving up usually means moving to another ship anyway. At least, moving up to that level.

Actually, in TOS there was no indication the Enterprise was the flagship. Indeed, the intent there was that it was just another ship, no more or less special than any other Starfleet ship. It wasn't until TNG that the Enterprise became Starfleet's flagship, which sadly got retconned into Trek XI.

Well, obviously the Yorktown didn't have as many exciting adventures, so yes. :p

I have a feeling it went something like this:

Kirk's Enterprise had lots of crazy adventures where they battled enemies and saved the world. As a result, the Enterprise became the most famous ship in the fleet, and therefore new cadets wanted to be assigned there. Over time, it wasn't just Kirk's Enterprise anymore. The whole Enterprise line carried on that same fame from Kirk's original ship. Starfleet Command, knowing that there was a high demand for positions on the Enterprise, could afford to be picky with who they chose to assign. Therefore, yes, I'd say that the Enterprise has the best and brightest crew in the fleet.

Rated among the worst actually. Its high casualty rate and sloppy security record was an embarassment. The Enterprise was thought of as a punishment assignment by most of the fleet. Upon return Kirk was "kicked up stairs" where it was thought he could do no harm. If not for those holos of underage hookers and Wrigley's blow Nogura wouldn't have let him with in 100 yards of another starship.

The worst Enterprise crew would have to be the one on board the Enterprise A at the end of TVH and during TFF. Sybok boarded the Enterprise A with a tiny number of armed personnel, who ran through the Enterprise's corridors completely unopposed.

On a modern warship a Marine would have killed them all using the closest mop handle.

Have you counted the number of times the original 1701 was hijacked? Once by space hippies!!!!!! At least the children who hijacked it had the help of a Friendly Angel. (I'd love to see Kirk's reports on those. The spin could be used to create articifical gravity)

I've always felt it was a rather big plot hole that in ''Tapestry'' Picard serves in a dead-end position on the Enterprise after destroying his personality and becoming timid. How did someone that was clearly outlined as a sub-par officer get duty on the Enterprise?

The answer is they didn't have the time/money to make a new crew and new ship.

But I think the fact that seems like a plot hole shows that the Enterprise is supposed to have the best. The only time she has officers with blemishes is when Picard requests them, like Ensign Ro or Ensign Sito (curiously both Bajorians...).

Well, I suppose we could say that Lieutenant Picard was a truly exemplary archeologist.
After all, Barclay had .... limited potential for command, but he got to serve aboard the Enterprise.

Lt. Picard in Tapestry was very good at what he did, he just wasn't good enough for advancement. We can assume that Captain Halloway had someone reliable, regardless of their career situation.

Barclay's former superiors praised him to get rid of him.

I'd say no better nor worse, at least not all of them. But I guess Enterprise D's crew is a bit better, it's a flagship after all.
