How Do You Feel About Chakotay?

Well he is a bit underdeveloped to be honest. After the initial strife or friction that is suppose to be between him and Janeway because of him leaving Starfleet and joining the Maquis he rather quickly quickly became your standard template first officer with only the occasional disagreement regarding Janeway's orders or solutions.

I don't know how stereotypical his Native American background is because I never really looked into that subject but it was never that much developed in the series either outside a couple of episodes.

Would I have wanted that there to be more disagreements between Chakotay and Janeway during the run of Voyager? I don't know because I would have to had been more invested in the character for that to be of interest in seeing how that would work out

In "Scorpion," when Chakotay tells Janeway that whatever comes, they'll get through it together, Kathryn puts her hand on his chest and smiles and says, "... I don't know what I'd ever do without you," or words to that effect. To me, that's really what their relationship was striving for, was aiming towards, rather than creating friction, for the sake of dramatic television. I've said this before, though, many times, that it irks the living hell out of me that he carried a torch for her, for so long. After "Resolutions," that should've put that baby to bed, entirely. Robert Beltran's cited "Unforgettable" as his favourite VOYAGER episode and it's easy to understand why. Virginia Madsen is really good in it and it's such a shame that Kellin couldn't have kind of replaced Seska on the show as Chakotay's main girlfriend. Save for the atrocious hairstyle and ears they forced on her and those pointless contacts, she was, by far, the most beautiful woman with whom Chakotay associated himself. I really feel that she's the Crème de la Crème ... and a far better choice than Janeway ...

I also wish they had moved Chakotay in a different direction if they had decided no J/C. My problem with Kellin was not the prosthetic but the premise. How do you have someone on board who everyone forgets after a few hours? She can't go on away missions. She sleeps in and no one knows her. Lol. I'm exaggerating a bit but you get my drift. Its a huge issue.

I really like Tessa in Timeless but again it is impossible. It feels like they shut down J/C but then every romance for both Chakotay and Janeway was doomed so the writers could have their cake (give Mulgrew what she felt her character needed) and eat it too (keep fans hoping for J/C right up until the end).

Tessa's looks were a bit severe, too, like Seska's were. Seven has it, too, of course. Chakotay has a thing for women with that kind of a look, though I don't quite understand it, myself. But yes, Kellin's premise was very awkward and I do wish that a sequel of some kind could've come of it, but you know what? Chakotay should've just bought into Seska's excuses, when she tried explaining away her Cardassian nature, after it was discovered. Then, he wouldn't have to walk that celebate line as the series progressed.

Agree, though "irk" even is maybe too strong a word for me. She clearly had no interest (either in him, or in letting herself act on any potential feelings she did have), which means Chak should have moved on long before he did. Seven aside, I didn 't really care for any of the "pairings" he had on the series. And the only reason I like Seven is because, well... I like Seven.
Your statement about Kellin just further clinches that Chak should be with yours truly (only since I look vaguely like Madsen ha ha).

I wish they had spread the story for Kellin out over a few episodes. Unforgettable felt rushed. Too much story crammed into a single episode. It should have had one episode catching the runaway and then another for when she returns. It's hard to push so much so quickly, particularly when you are dealing with chemistry and J/C in the background. Case in point: Workplace took two episodes to play with Janeway's off ship romance. I can't imagine cramming it into one.

You have a thing for Chakotay, then? Or just gents who happen to look rather like Robert Beltran?
Hmm. Not sure how to answer this. ;)
I do have a thing for the character Chakotay, yes. On a purely physical plane I'd likely be attracted to guys who look like him, but attraction for me lies more in the connection I feel with someone, intellectually and otherwise. :techman:

That's too bad if she did :( that's unprofessional.
Perhaps.

But very human.
I've seen and read about much worse things. I've read about rock bands where certain members haven't spoken to each other for years and there have been members who have bad mouthed each other in public. I know about a sports team where the star of the team froze out a newcomer because the newcomer was brought in to replace the star's buddy. It became so bad that the club had to buy back the player they sold to get "peace in the house" (I wish that had happened in Voyager too).

I've also exporeienced workplaces where there have been a lot of badmouthing and backstabbing,in fact I work at such a place now where I of all people) have to be the peacemaker between two colleagues who hate each other so there are a lot of "unprofessional" people out there.

Compared to that, Mulgrew and Ryan were very professional since they at least got the job done. And as for that conflict, those to blame are those in charge who destroyed a good and well functioning team.

nobody is to blame for your actions. If they acted unprofessionally it's on them, not any producer or higher up. You are responsible for your own actions.

Well imo relationships crash for a variety of reasons and usually blame can be spread around but every individual has to be held accountable for their share.

Beltran is angry because his friends and he are getting the short stick. That's tptb fault. He starts acting out on set, that's on him. Mulgrew feels betrayed because they bring in a sexy blonde because tptb want red hot males to watch, tptb can't be surprised she is insulted. Mulgrew takes it out on Ryan. That's on her.

It's a two way street. You can throw the angry ball but if no one throws it back the nasty party is over.

As i said earlier, the tptb can be criticized and I'm not concerned but toss that ball at the person working side by side next to you and I'm not impressed.

I don't think I noticed an imbalance of the cast when watching without being aware of background tensions. Seven IS featured but the others do get screen time. Chemistry is difficult to write in. Like there was chemistry with Chakotay and Janeway, but not so much with him and Seven.

I noticed. My husband stopped watching in season 7 because he said too many shows about the doctor and 7. He still is unaware of the back stage shenanigans. I want to see his reaction to Endgame. We are at Workforce.

He's got new Voyager to watch, lucky person! (Of course Seven and the Doctor are in Endgame and there are TWO Janeways )

I actually don't care for the direction they went with Janeway during season 7; I liked her character much more in 1-6. S7 also has too much of the Doc for me, but I can tolerate a higher concentration of Seven more than most others it seems... overall, her screen time is actually not much greater than the Doc and Paris, for example, if you go by line counts.

The first officer is a tough role to have unless you've some outstanding character trait like Mr. Spock. You tend to get squeezed out of the juiciest stuff as an authority figure but 'not-quite-the-captain' assistant to the boss, who dominates proceedings. I thought Beltran did what he could with the role and I don't think his apparent off-sceen disaffection injured anything he did on-screen.

I've posted the line counts before and Janeway is always at the top. The Doc and Seven are 2 and 3 but not by very much at all. Another thing I've done in the past is break down every episode based on which character(s) is/are featured and it also broke down fairly even (except for Harry)
