How do the new Star Trek shows compare to The Mandolarian?

I thought MANDO got off to a tepid start this season, but the last few episodes have been great. DISCO has been pretty steady all season.

I was talking with my son the other day, and I said "I like this season, but...nothing's happened!"

Of course that's an exaggeration, but the pace is definitely...leisurely.

In a good way.

But the show is nonstop action . Balls to the Walls kickassing only to take a few moments here and there to let Baby Yoda do something cute and endearing so we can all smile and aww, and then it's back to fucking up Stormtroopers and monsters and criminal aliens.

The ass kicking is interesting but it's all so weirdly woven together. Din is not an engaging character and Grogu is highly overrated as far as cuteness.

Of course that's an exaggeration, but the pace is definitely...leisurely.
That explains why I am in no hurry to catch up :D

Being episodic makes The Mandalorian better right away. :nyah: (runs and hides)

But besides that, The Mandalorian is just an epic show. The last 3 episodes have been exceptional. Bill Burr was crazy good.

Discovery has cool and interesting characters, but that's it. No good character development. Jumping back and forth between verses doesn't help either.

Picard just completely sucks. Kestra and Arcana are the two best characters, and they are minor ones.

I will get up and watch The Mandalorian with my coffee and weed first thing Friday. Never done that before with a show. Even the ones I like I may not watch the new episode right away. This show is different.

I want to step back for a moment and say.

There is a good Star Trek series and a good Star Wars series currently on the air, with no signs of them being taken off it and lots more to come.

How awesome is that?!
To me that's the best part. I don't compare because it is :censored:ing pointless. And exercise in fan wanking over who's franchise is bigger. It's pointless. :brickwall:

But, having two shows that add to the universes I like? Yes, please. Having interesting characters and growth and lore building in Trek and Star Wars? Please and thank you. Mandalorian not having an interesting main character has not kept it from being entertaining. Discovery's story choices have not kept me from loving each and every moment of Burnham's character development.

People always worry about oversaturation. If we get to that point it will be well worth it.

I just sat down to watch the first two episodes of The Mandalorian today for the first time.

They were fine. Engaging and fun. Kind of predictable and familiar, though. It felt like it was so busy trying to be a Sergio Leone spaghetti Western in space that it doesn't really hit anything new. "Hardened badass man reconnects with his inner decency when he has to protect a child" is territory I've seen a million times before.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery were much more thrilling, engaging, and emotionally moving than "The Mandalorian" and "The Child." "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars" were an epic tragedy on a scale new to ST. "The Mandalorian" and "The Child" were... entertaining fetch quests.

Discovery did take off with a bang. I was really enjoying it at first. Loved the Klingons, but that feeling didn't last. The Mandalorian just keeps getting better.

Original TOS watcher as a baby, am close to watching every filmed canonical iteration with filling in some TNG gaps now.

Casual SW fan, saw it in a movie palace in 77.

DSC I watch ever week with my wife, and my attitude is, Oh what now? It tries too hard to be of the now with the forced feelz and Hallmark movie moments. To me. and there's always some puzzle box mystery I couldn't care less about. At least this season it is only the fate of the entire federation and not all life in the multiverse.

Mando, I can't WAIT for that thing to come on, on Fridays. Love it like I haven't since Breaking Bad. Frankly, I am not sure why I like it. The sparser dialog and wide, open feel is part.

How do you feel about the other recent Star Trek shows - PIC, and LD?

Thanks for asking. LD, I watched three of, to give it a chance, though the promos turned me off. Because of LD, I will go to my grave not having seen all filmed/aired Trek. Oh well. It is not my cup of tea.

PIC was such a disappointment. I (stupidly) thought it would be a character drama (like mainly words and dialogue) set in the Trek universe. I had read Chabon novels. But he was now part of the Trek world and had to produce action-adventure with maybe more character development. I didn't care at all about the mystery he was setting out to solve. It felt like very generic scifi, but very convoluted. Ima stop. Just too many things I did not like, and why be negative.

With that said, I have liked the last two eps of DSC. Don't know why. I want to like it. But it tries so hard to make me "FEEL moved, now!" I'm not into that. But I am older now and not really of this culture, I suppose. It happens.

On the other side, I just watched Charlie Brown Christmas with my wife last night and the simplicity and charm were in fact moving. And why I like Mando . . . it's cool (reserved and quiet) and not sappy/Hallmarky, I think. Not really sure.

Well, do note this post is because I was asked. Like what you like, whoever you are.

I'm (finally) listening to "Mission Log: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast." The most recent one I listened to was "Court Martial." In the podcast, one of the commentators was talking about the moral or message that we can find in many of the TOS episodes, and he finds that appealing. He then said something to the effect that, if you remove the message, you have Star Wars. Now, he wasn't bashing Star Wars, but he was stating or implying that Star Trek is known more for, at least to him, as a morality play or message or commentary on our time. He seems to like art that speaks to us on more than just a wiz-bang action level.

It sounds like you are the same. You want Trek to be more than just action-adventure.

I love the 90s/early 00s TV show "ER." I've yet to see Trek come up with such quality writing. That disappoints me.

There's truly good "good."

And then there is good-for-trek "good."

Watching DS9, the gold standard for character depth and development, but still so many of the lines are comic bookish.

It is what it is.

But yeah, I enjoyed episode of the week with an issue or moral dilemma. Until ENT dulled me away from Trek.

I enjoyed the first couple eps of DSC this season and really liked the first few of S2 till the producers were fired.

Even if I live to be 100, I'll never understand "I have to watch it all!"
There is very few that I watch all every single installment, even Star Wars and Star Trek. Yeah, have to catch them all doesn't apply for me.

It sounds like you are the same. You want Trek to be more than just action-adventure.
Here's my thing-if Trek does do that then great, awesome and I'll enjoy it more. But, even if it doesn't, it's still set to be that entertainment based franchise. Now, obviously that will vary from person to person and if it isn't entertaining then see above regarding not needing to watch. But, for me, I can find depth in a lot of different things so moving past action-adventure is easy for me.

Mileage, etc.

After the finales fan service just dialed it up to 20...Mando takes an even more sizable lead.

And Disco had a good episode this week.

I think we are going to see a big change in who is running Trek when CBS-ACCESS rebrands itself as the Paramount Network. They are going want to make a big splash that gains attention and they also know they are in serious competition with Disney Space Sci Fi due to their Star wars stuff especially the Mandalorian. They got to be looking at stuff like The Orville and The Mandalorian and feeling frustrated they aren't nearly as popular as that stuff.

Going after Picard and also a Pike series to me kind of shows that they are paying attention to this stuff but I think in the end they are going to need a big name behind the scenes. Only they need to actually land the person. Between Tarantino,Fuller and Noah Hawley they have quite a few quality big names slip through their fingers which is I think a big reason they still hold onto Kurtzman. At some point they need to land one of those names though IMO.
