How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 70s?

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

Already been said, but:

Star Trek influenced a lot of shows of the 70s, so the question is a bit difficult. If Star Trek started in that era, we wouldn't have:

*Ark II
*Space: 1999
*Starlost
*Jason of Star Command
*Star Trek: The Motion Picture
*Buck Rogers, Season II
*Space Academy

Again, as already mentioned by other posters, there probably would be skirts (only not so mini)....and hot pants...boots...perms, afros, bell bottoms...farrah fawcett hairstyles...groovy music...

Roddenberry would have gotten away with more, I think...then he would've in the 60s...

Furthermore, if Star Wars came before Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Trek (and the aforementioned Buck Rogers) would have been covering the same ground: A cute or annoying robot as a main character, space battles,etc...

Funny thing is, I can't recall any sci-fi show of the 70s that had strong writing. It was all about the ideas, and the characters...

Had Star Trek been made ten years later, I think the look of the show would have been very similar to Space:1999. That show was made right in the middle of the seventies and is really reflective of that era particularly in regard to the look of the uniforms and hair styles.

Hmm...

Exactly. If TOS was made in the seventies, it would have looked like TMP.

There was no social unrest in the late 70s.

Of course there was social unrest then. There's always social unrest.
Except in a utopia -- and there are no utopias. But today, a lot of people have the impression the late 1970s were one big party, when everybody was disco dancing, wearing silly clothes, doing tons of cocaine and having lots of quick, hedonistic sex.

God, I miss those days! :)

D'oh! I missed the party by three years! (born in 82):lol:

Annnnd let's for forget that the 70s was all one style: the 60s sure wasn't. If the show had been made before 1975 it would've had a different vibe than a disco-era show.

Re that Buck Rogers matte...the show needed more of that stuff: the humans building a new world on the ruins of the old.

Yeah, it was fun while it lasted. But then along came AIDS, and it was like, "Okay, folks, party's over! Everyone out of the pool!" Sometimes literally. ;)

I agree with most.
Hairstyles, wardrobe would be alot more like Space:1999. I think that women would be more in officer positions in TOS.
If season 1 of TOS came out in Sept.1977 I think we would see a more phaser trigger happy crew on away missions ala the Star Wars effect from the film that came out in May 1977.
The visual effects may have been slightly better.
Matt Jefferies design of the Enterprise may have been more like PhaseII's ship interior designs as other posters have said.
To be perfectly honest though
Phase II concept for the refurbished bridge circa 1977 reminds me a lot of the Enterprise bridge in Star Trek XI.

We never knew that the original would happen. Many people think it would have been a lot worse if it contued into the seventies. I say it could have been just as good if not better esp. since Roddenberry would be back and off his back, the censures as it was.

Even with Brittany Spears?

I guess more pajama-type uniforms and longer hair would have been seen had TOS been made in the 1970s.

If TOS was made in the 70s and William Ware Theiss still did the costumes, he might've come up with a jumper like the ones he designed for Roddenberry's 70s pilot Planet Earth.

If TOS was made in the 70s and William Weiss Theiss still did the costumes, he might've come up with a jumper like the ones he designed for Roddenberry's 70s pilot Planet Earth.
The name is William Ware Theiss.

Although Weiss is also nice and would suffice.

DOH! I should've caught that!

Coffee hasn't cleared up the fog in my head yet. Been working late these past few weeks and I feel like Edith Keeler after being hit by the truck.

Shatner would be between his best toup and the hair helmet he wore on TJ Hooker and for Star Trek II - IV.
