How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 70s?

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

Imagine, a world where the most successful sci-fi show of the 60's was Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

While movies like Star Wars might not have been made, at least SeaQuest would still have been a go.

;)

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

Not really, since SeaQuest was a pretty blatant Trek copy in a lot of ways. Well, maybe we would've gotten a SeaQuest where the whole thing was like the goofy, Voyage-esque second season.

In the spirit of keeping this thread fun and not over-analyzing, The Way to Eden could have made an interesting disco-themed ep.

1. A lot more of that "wockety wockety wockety" sound in the musical score.

2. There would have been an episode with a cantina scene in it.

3. The sets would have looked like the sets in Buck Rogers.

4. They might have had some robots onboard -- maybe Science Officer Questor?

5. At best, it would have been like the proposed Star Trek Phase II series. At worst...see items #1-#3.

Kirk's leisure uniform -- and his toupee -- would have looked like this.

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

As "jiggle TV" was a sign of those times, I would not be surprised if someone would've tried to show Uhura, Chapel or Rand in a bikini.

How is that different from what TOS actually did? Roddenberry was constantly modifying the female guest stars' costumes to have less material. He would've had them running around naked if he could've gotten away with it. (And in fact, I gather that the one non-Trek feature film he produced and wrote, Roger Vadim's Pretty Maids All in a Row, was one of the very first mainstream American motion pictures to feature nude scenes after the R rating permitting them was introduced.)

Well, I saw the 70's as becoming much more blatantly graphic as the decade went on. CHARLIE'S ANGELS was literally the "poster child" for this. Even as obviously revealing as many of the "real" TOS' costumes were in the 60's, I would've expected the skinfest to be even more insidious if it had been delayed until 10 years later. That's one thing you've got to give credit to Roddenberry and company: at least they didn't put Uhura or Chapel or Rand in a bikini.

When Kirk's shirt ripped, there would have been a mat of chest hair there rather than the shaved look.

And his 'make out theme' music would have had more of a "Boom Chica Wowaa sound":evil:

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

I was wondering what if TOS had been made in 1977 instead of 1967? How different would you think it would have been?

It would have been cancelled during development, because Par would see that Fox beat them to it with STAR WARS and shitcanned the whole idea (which is what happened with PLANET OF THE TITANS.)

Of course that assumes SW would have happened if there hadn't been ST ... not a sure thing, since the 70s TREK cons proved the burgeoning market for something in the sf/space vein.

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

Had Star Trek been made ten years later, I think the look of the show would have been very similar to Space:1999. That show was made right in the middle of the seventies and is really reflective of that era particularly in regard to the look of the uniforms and hair styles.

Re: How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 7

I agree. Star Trek and Kung Fu were both unconventional, philosophical shows whose creators got them on the air by disguising them as Westerns.

:wtf: W.T.F?? With emphasis on the "F" !!!!!

Trek disguised as a western ???, whooda thunk it?

Oh wait, my bad, it explains TOS-R perfectly.
Now that the series is long cancelled, they can drop the disguise. I'm so glad that real neato spaceships, far out phaser guns and green women replaced those tired looking old covered wagons, Winchester 73's and ugly saloon girls. Too bad they couldn't cover up how quickly they got from town to town, or how everybody they came across spoke real good English.

;)

^I can't tell if you're joking or not, but it's common knowledge that Roddenberry pitched ST to network executives as "Wagon Train to the stars" -- Wagon Train being a popular Western of the day.

Odd... that's not Persis Khambatta in the Decker picture. Her stand-in?

The basic plot of Mudd's Women has been used in a few Westerns. Probably not the only recycled plot.

Good eye...I grabbed the photo from somewhere, but a different head had been PS'd on, didn't notice before. Should have went to a reliable source.

The ears match.

I know it seems strange, but I look upon TOS and KUNG FU as being distant cousins, creatively speaking.

So did Majel Barrett. She pressed to obtain the merchandising rights for "Kung Fu". I think it was the only non-Roddenberry show featured in the Lincoln Enterprises mail order catalogue.
