How did Yoda die?

If force ghosts are standard, you'd think that the Jedi would have haunted the shit out of Vader and Palpatine.

Didn't Yoda merge himself with the Force *before* he died? At the last minute?

I always thought that if Yoda had died naturally, he couldn't have done this. It's like Spock putting his katra into McCoy's mind; he did it to stave off his death. Same goes for Obi-Wan.

Force Ghosts might not exist.

Luke could just be womp rat shit crazy.

he thought he could make shit float with the power of his mind.

It was probably all just a dissociative fugue state from after old Ben molested him.

I know some don't like to bring the prequels into any SW topic, but Qui-Gonn was definitely very physically dead before he ghosted.

I always figured he died of old age as well, or more likely a medical condition exasperated by his old age. (He coughed and wheezed a lot.)

Too much weed, man.

Puppet AIDS.

Hepuppetitis, surely?

He died of terminal flatulence. He was holding it in and it strained his tripes.

Whatever he dies of (if he does,) it will be painless and scored by John Williams, complete with a large chorus.

As pointed out, Qui Gon did it post-death.

This is the first time I've thought about the topic, but my gut instinct says "old age with a hint of hastening the end by no longer channelling the Force to sustain his advanced years".

The problem with the old age theory is that Yoda disappears on his deathbed in front of Luke.

Perhaps I'm giving Lucas too much credit but Yoda's death is very allegorical to Jesus' death inasmuch as he reappears as a quasi ghost like figure.

Well, as someone posted upthread, 90% of the overarching plots in SW (at least, for the OT) are riffs of what Lucas read from Joseph Campbell. Campbell's work itself is heavily intertwined with Jung's discussions of archetypes and persistent mythological motifs, including religious symbols, so I can definitely recognise where you're coming from here.

I didn't personally get the vibe that Yoda actually sacrificed himself so Luke/the universe could be saved (c.f. the ridiculously blatant referencing of this motif with Neo in the Matrix films), more that he felt it was his natural time and did not fight against it in the way a Dark Side user would, but took the opportunity afforded by his natural passing to transcend and become a Force ghost.

Interesting thanks. Now that you mention it, it's interesting the Rowling borrows from many of the "dark figure," motifs as well in Potter - Voldermort's demise being not that dissimilar to Sidious.

Meh, I guess everyone borrows from classical literature so they're all plagiarists to some degree. LOL

Rowling seems to be more overt in her borrowing from people like Jung from what I have been told/read or at least giving nods to his ideas in her early books.

But Palpatine died after getting betrayed by Vader. But didnt Voldemort die from some obscure magical rule about wands?
