How could they have made this a better show?

Or rather, after WWIII humanity finally decided that their usual BS had gone too far and decided to take lessons from their new space buddies. Even though they helped there were eventually people who grew up after WWIII who hadn't experienced the horror and wanted to go out and do their own thing, which the Vulcans said was a big no-no since we were still immature. So these humans go out and learn about themselves and their place in the Universe while the Vulcans are left to decide whether or not it's time to let the boys be men. That's the Human-Vulcan relationship in ENT.

They should not have made T'Pol a joke from the outset by making her a catsuitted knockoff of Seven of Nine.)
The Vulcans are usually shown in robes of some kind, put T'Pol in something like that. Think about Japanese
Samurai/ Jedi Knight form of dress. But still give her freedom of movement. With the right material you'd
still be able to see her big fukking boobs.

As for improvements
- Have it set closer in time to First Contact. Cochrane should still be around. We should witness humanity evolving, show the problems that still exist.
Enterprise to only what? A hundred years before Kirk. Back it up a half century, have them talk about the problems on Earth, a little social commentary. Explain how space/star travel and exploration will help the folks back home. Resources and colonies. Have Admiral Forrest bitch out Archer once and a while as to why he hasn't found X yet.
- Explain the world as the 22nd humans know it.
Throw a little zinger in sometimes, show they don't think just like us. Two centurys had to have changed us in some ways.
- More Vulcan. They should have visited Vulcan in the beginning. Use it to explain their society and culture, their motives right in the beginning.
I like what they did with the Vulcans.
- No transporters
- bullets, no rayguns
Yes and yes.
- MACOs from the start.
- More professional crew. It's inconceivable Earth would send some bunch of unexperienced newbies into the unknown, no diplomats, trained soldiers, a first contact protocol. It's dumb.
Mix it up. Military and survey/scientist, professional spacers (like Mayweather) vs inexperienced wiz kids (like Archer).
- traditional intro with Archer saying the space: the final frontier lines, no song
Show Scott Bakula sitting in the captains chair singing the song, while standing behind him the rest of the cast hums the back up tune.
____________________________

1) The Federation is already in existence, many centuries old. There's an on going debate thru the series about whether the Humans will be asked to join, Vulcans argue no.

2) One of the things Archer sent out to do is find out about this mysterious Federation.

3) We should hear something about the Romulans (briefly) every third episode, no one ever seen one, they're spreading like cancer, a ship has gone missing.

4) The Enterprise is too big, reduce it in size by a third or more. Make it tight inside, world war two submarine tight.

5) More beagle stories.

Absolutely. Porthos should have been having a lot more alien dog sex!
But not with some stupid species that we've never seen before/after! Porthos has to get it on with an established species, like a Tribble! :shifty:
I believe the only Tribble on Enterprise was fed to one of Phlox's critters. Besides, Tribbles are the only species I've ever heard of who mate with themselves.

Alternate Season 1

- Pilot: "Broken Bow"

- In between: Our Season 4 without "Storm Front", "Home", "Daedalus", "Observer Effect", "Bound", and "These Are the Voyages". These are replaced with some decent standalone episodes from our Seasons 1 and 2, like "The Andorian Incident", "Silent Enemy", "Carbon Creek", "Dead Stop", "Cogenitor", "Regeneration" (guilty pleasure, and for a supposedly canon-violating it's quite good :p)

- Season finale: "The Expanse"

Alternate Season 2

- Our Season 3

Alternate Season 3

- What Manny Coto had planned for our Season 5

Season 4's stories wouldn't work without the character developing and other plot elements that occurred in regular S2 and S3.

And I don't think S4 was much good either. It was just the spineless pandering to the audience and arcs that make it SEEM good when it's not.

You're probably correct. Some further alterations with the Season 4 storylines would be necessary to make it work. In the current form, The Forge/The Awakening/Kir'Shara succeeds because Vulcans had been jerks in the previous seasons and several episodes had dealt with the Vulcan-Andorian conflict.

Not sure what the difference between "seemingly good" and "actually good" is supposed to be here. I for one found Season 4 enjoyable. I enjoyed Seasons 3 & 4 of "Enterprise" more than Seasons 1 and 2 and probably also more than Voyager. For me it was the best Trek since the end of DS9. Are you trying to say that Season 4 of Enterprise only seemed so good because Seasons 1 & 2 and Voyager had sucked so much? ;) Could be true, but I still enjoyed it.

Not sure whether I prefer Season 3 or Season 4 though. Both had very different styles, so comparisons aren't easy.

Yes! Porthos giving out Easter eggs, while T'Pol lectures the crew on how illogical the whole concept of Easter is (both religious and secular), until somebody slips her some chocolate... and discovers Vulcans have never tried chocolate and it makes them high, giddy, and utterly illogical... :p

Seriously, the only way to make this show better would have been to never have made it at all.

I'm a fan of this show. I really like it and don't think it was as bad as everyone says. Sure, it had some clunkers. All the different series did. One thing I would have liked seen developed is the friendship/relationship between Archer and Hoshi. He went in person looking for her and in the first few episodes seemed to be a friend/mentor to her. It just seemed to me there was more of a friendship than they showed. I would have liked to have seen Archer sort of mentor her and get her her space legs.

They were caught in a Catch 22. If they just used existing species like Klingons or Romulans or Borg or Ferengi, fans would complain that they're recycling old ideas (which of course, the fans did, when all the above races eventually showed up). If they created new races, there's the risk they could not be popular and backfire on the producers (which is exactly what happened with the Suliban). And fans would be asking 'Who the hell are these aliens and why have we never seen them before?' (which is, of course, exactly what happened)

Personally, I think that the Ferengi episode sucked, while the Borg episode was quite good. The Suliban didn't work as antagonists, but the Xindi did. So either can succeed or fail.

F -- no! Am I the only true TOS fan who thinks that Cloud Miners was a piece of crap? Seriously, a lot of Coto's "ideas" made me want to hurl. I liked season 3 and parts of season 4. I would've liked a season 5 that had a lot of season 3 (a mission, desperate-ness of the characters, consequences, completion of character missions) while having a sprinkle of the fanboy-ism of season 4.

The stories needed to be about three dimensional characters in believable situations.

IMHO, the way they could have made the show better is give it a break. After Voyager ended Berman and company should have taken about 5 years off. Give Star Trek a rest, recharged their creative batteries, bring in some fresh blood behind-the-scenes. Just given themselves (and the fans) a breather. I think time off would have done this show a world of good.

Berman and Braga wanted to take a break for a year or two, but UPN wanted another show right away.

B&B weren't always the bad guys.

What little I have read it did sound like a studio decision. I think they should have fought harder for a break. I'm not really blaming them. I'm not a Berman hater. But I do think Star Trek in general needs a break. I'll take one or two more Abramsverse movies but then I think Paramount should stop. Give the franchise a rest, let people miss it for a while. I know it's a bit off-topic. Just my thoughts.

But for all of Enterprise's faults I love the series. There were some stinker episodes but there were some gems too.

Berman made it clear in an interview that even if he did insist on taking a Trek break, they'd just have found someone else to make the show when they wanted it to be made. So it's either "Do it or you're fired". And seeing the reputation he got as a result of wanting to keep his job...
