How come no one is working on the Star Trek sequel?

Bob Orci said on trekmovie.com a few weeks ago that he was reading Greg Cox's Eugenics Wars novels.

I find TOS-era canon to be somewhat troubling in this area, including Space Seed itself, which according to current dating convention took place in 2267; if they were to do Khan, IMO the best course of action would be to push the Eugenics Wars into the mid-21st century. ( Although this would undoubtedly be used as more "proof" that Spock did not come from the Prime universe.:guffaw:)

On the DVD commentary it was said that they thought about inserting a Botany Bay scene in STXI after the credits but decided that such a thing would tie their hands too much for the sequel.

They really are facing a Kobayashi Maru scenario, aren't they?

There's a new movie they need to make. If they create new characters and take the franchise in a different direction, they'll be guilty of doing unmentionable things to people's childhoods. If they use elements from the existing canon, they'll be guilty of an abject lack of creativity.

It really is a no-win scenario. I wonder if they go over stuff like this in film school.

If they use Khan, it'll just go to show how monumentally talentless and unoriginal the clowns writing it really are.

Just like George Lucas. How dare he use the same villain, Darth Vadar, over and over again!?
He's the one who came up with Vadar[sic]. Using Khan in the next film will just be plundering a classic because they haven't got an original idea. These are the berks who wrote those dismal Transformers films, and people here seem delighted to have the future of Star Trek in the hands of such a pair of chumps.

So according to you, Nicholas Meyer was a chump for using Khan in TWoK because he didn't come up with him in the first place? And the writers can't write about the Romulans or Klingons or Harry Mudd or Zarabeth or whoever because someone else came up with them? BTW, no one writing or producing the next movie has said anything about the details of the story they're working on, so this all of this speculation about Khan or anything else is fanwank. . . As for the Transformers movies, the first one wasn't too bad, Orci and Kurtzman didn't really have too much input into the second one (writer's strike and all) and they aren't attached to the third one. . . but it is sooooo nice to see you've already got your hate on. . . :vulcan:

Then your beef with them lies in the fact that they wrote Transformers. Whether they reuse a villain is irrelevant unless you are going on record as saying that A LOT OF past writers are "chumps" too.

Transformers is a film franchise aimed at children. I'm guessing you don't watch Fringe?

Are you saying the film will be just as good as the new SW films?

But Vader (the REAL Vader not emo Ani) was only in the last couple of minutes of ROTS what does that have to do with the PT?

Tell that to the transformer purists.

I watch Fringe. These people are totally the right match for Star Trek.

Oh, has it been mentioned? Someone is working on the next movie. Or so claims the front page of this very site.

So basically this topic rather null and void.

I recall that a lot of people gave Berman an enormous amount of grief for rushing out Enterprise while Voyager was still finishing. "Trek needs a break, take your time, take a few years to make a really good series" etc. (which was a valid argument).

Now the movie producers get grief for NOT rushing out a new movie immediately after Trek '09.

You just can't win around here.

Don't worry, they're about to start. The thousand monkeys were otherwise occupied with the last Transformers script.

They'e not working on the net Transformers... at least that's what I read up thread. Nor did they have much influence on the last one, writers strike and all.

And yet many fans seem to be asking for a revision of the Khan story?

Which ST movies had "original" ideas? TMP remade "The Changeling", ST II was a sequel to "Space Seed", ST III resurrected Spock only one film after he died, ST IV had yet another giant probe heading to Earth, ST V was yet another Kirk vs a god being storyline, and ST VI featured the Klingons again and was a big set up/cross promotion for "Unification" on TNG.

New is good. Batman vs. The Joker happened very differently in "Batman" (1989) and "The Dark Knight", despite the same basic premise.
The Zephram Cochrane from "Metamorphosis" bore zero resemblence to the one in "First Contact" in either looks or personality. The same can be said for the Saaviks in STII and III or even the Klingons in TOS and TNG (and none of them have the alternate-universe/timeline/whatever excuse!) . Therefore, Khan can appear and act however the writers want.

Which, to be honest, was and will be the case anyway. We fans will find a way to rationalize it .
