The novels - while uncanon - make Admiral Janeways actions even worse: because of her selfish, egoistical, stubborn behavior, billions of Federation citizens are killed by the Borg. A very high price to pay just to get one single ship back.
While I haven't read it just yet, I believe another novel establishes that in every timeline where the Borg are not stopped via something similar to the events of Destiny, they overwhelm the galaxy in under a century.
From that viewpoint, as unfortunate as the Borg invasion was, it was ultimately necessary to allow that to play out.
