Hoshi Sato

No. I think she had come a long way confidence wise over the course of the series, but in general she still did not show a strong command presence. I do see her heading up a top academic position someday.

She didn't show a strong command presence in the regular universe, but she had it in the mirror universe! I believe Hoshi had the same capabilities in both universes, but in the regular universe, she didn't have the right encouragement to take charge.

in the Enterprise episode "Terra Prime" Hoshi Sato was acting captain for a brief time, if the series had managed to run for seven years do you think Hoshi would've made Captain?

James

Unfortunately no. I think the series misused her and think her "acting captain" stint and her sudden martial arts skills in Observer Effect was a cooler Hoshi ... and wish she'd been that way from the beginning.

Speaking of "Observer Effect," there is a black mark on Hoshi's record from her breaking a commander's arm over a poker game. It would probably trip her up when it comes to getting promotions.

Then again, Archer helped steal NX-Beta for an unauthorized test flight and they still made him captain.

Political appointment.

Just because she broke the guys arm, it doesn't mean that he reported it. I forget did she say? They made such a big deal about the black mark in the pilot just from a verbal disagreement with Archer.

Besides, Karate aside, i want to know why she didn't have a poker tournament on enterprise every week? Maybe she just didn't trust the command staff? O, if there was no money to speak of, I wonder what they gambled with?

Its the Archer Clause, if you steal a ship for a "noble purpose" you get a slap on the wrist. See Spock in "The Menangerie" and Kirk in STIII.

I recall her saying something along the lines of "I got kicked out after two months." When Archer tries to get her to join Enterprise, she tells him that it would take a formal reprimand, which would disqualify her from serving. My interpretation is that a second reprimand in conjunction with the previous mark on her record would kill her career with Starfleet.

And who knows? Maybe she was hosting a poker tournament every week in the mess hall, but we don't know about it because TPTB were more interested in what was happening in T'Pol's and Trip's quarters.

Officers playin' poker on a ship named Enterprise...

...don't y'all think ENT borrowed enough from TNG without goin' for the recreational activities, too?

I read an Enterprise Novel where 80 percent of the script was this lot in the mess playing a game of dunegons and dragons on Mars.

Horrible and painful.

Which is probably why they threw us Malcolm and Travis playing chess in the mess hall, with the mention of Malcolm as the ship's champion.

I didn’t find that she had much more command presence in the mirror universe either. I definitely didn’t buy that Empress Hoshi bit. She was more conniving in the MU, but still seemed to lack the inner “metal” that strong leaders possess IMO.

But she wasn't an inspirational leader, she was a tyrannical despot.

Completly different styles.

Would Sisko ever suggest that if his officers did their job well that he would sleep with them?

See.

Well she quit/resigned after a decade.

You'd have to wonder if they offered her "what?" to stay in the fleet?

^^^ her own shuttle to avoid the Transporter? Carpet in her room to reduce vibrations from the ships engines? Her own niche in the kitchen to make her grandmothers soup? Travis?

Isn't 7 years the the min. amount of time to make Lt Commander
I could see her as department head of communications

I can recall someone saying that she should become a professor of linguistics at Starfleet Academy so she can teach a young Uhura.

Let's say there was some sense to the Character.

Hoshi is head of the Communications department.

she would also be head of the linguistics department and systems manager that is, head of the computer section too.

she probably would have at least 15 people under her.

so her rank should have been Lt Commander.

But we are dealing with the Beebs and they seemed to ignore reality in favor of something else I cannot define.
