I never realized until just poking around the net how much HH fanfic is out there. Tons, and some of it's not bad.

More than a few people have written stories about the final days at Stalag 13. One story in particular was rather sad as it told of Burkhalter on trial for war crimes including the execution of Hogan and his team after their operation had been discovered.

Ouch.

Yeah, some aren't very pretty. I like the ones that retain that careful balance of drama and humor that the show carried.

On the flip side I read some decent stories about the team coming together. It had Newkirk as the longest serving prisoner and Lebeau as the second. Backstory was Newkirk was bring ostracized by a clique minded RAF officer who was senior POW before Klink and Hogan's arrival. Newkirk is constantly being punished when Lebeau arrives and eventually befriends Newkirk. They soon team up with Kinch and it's basically the three of them against everyone else, except for Shultz.

When the Red Cross sees Newkirk's severe condition just when Burkhalter is visiting Burkhalter has no choice but to relieve the camp Kommandant and replaces him with Klink. Things then start to be more humane with Klink, but the RAF senior POW is still a prick and still has it in for Newkirk.

Finally Hogan arrives at the camp and becomes the senior POW. He near immediately starts to straighten things out among the prisoners and gets the RAF officer and his cronies transferred out to another camp. He also starts to win the respect of the other prisoners and starts identifying individuals with certain talents and invites them to join his team and to build their set-up.

The story outliines pretty much all the neat set-ups they had on the show right down to how the tunnel access through one of the bunks was constructed. The story also puts Stalag 13 and Barracks 2 right on top of an abandoned and forgotten WW1 underground bunker which serves as the hub for Hogan's tunnel system.

Pretty neat story even if rather long.

The show use to come on everyday just before or just after Star Trek so I watched it all the time back in the 1970's and I remember enjoying the show. I have not seen it since then but now I'm curious about it. During the period when I watched it I randomly ran into Bob Craine which was strange to say the least. He was staying in a condo and I delivered newspapers there and met him.

I also remember HH being on around the same time as TOS in reruns. Good times.

As I said in my initial post I hadn't watched HH in decades until recently. For my tastes it still holds up well.

It does, doesn't it. It's been years and years since I've seen it but have just started watching again. Fortunately, I don't remember most of the shows so that makes it all the better.

It was largely situational humour where the characters are still acted essentially straight (within the fictional context).

Watching these episodes HH really was a precursor to MASH, especially MASH's earlier seasons.

Cute. I just watched an episode where it looks like they have to kill someone wherein Carter objects to the effect, "Gee, that doesn't sound like us."

Uh, yeah. Meanwhile they blow up trains and facilitate circumstances for the RAF to bomb installations where no doubt a lot if people are killed.

No, this was a first season episode where they thought they had to kill a scientist working on atomic research. But then they find out he wants to defect. And, of course, Colonel Crittenden is on hand to complicate matters further.

Ah. Understandable then. The tone in the first season swung wildly back and forth between the humor with an undercurrent of menace that characterized the later seasons and over the top slapstick. It wasn't until the second season that the producers found what they considered to be the right balance.

This show kills me. Every single episode makes me laugh at some point or other. I like the characters and well delivered. Good character actors as guests. The writing is usually good. And I often like the music. It's just fun.

Even in episodes that are relatively un-comedic, every moment John Banner is on screen is golden.

Whenever Shultz tastes Lebeau's cooking it's almost as if he's having an orgasm.

Werner Klemperer excelled at playing an egotistic coward and all round doofus who nonetheless had a measure of humanity. He sometimes liked to talk tough, but he could never really hurt anyone. He desperately wanted to be seen as tough as anyone else in the German military, but he just tried way too hard to be liked. It's also amusing to see Klink torture the violin when in fact Klemperer was supposedly a talented violinist.

Agreed. For Klink, brutal was putting someone in solitary confinement for 30 days. Klink was a bookkeeper trying to pretend he was a soldier, and it showed.
