Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

^ Yeah, I gotta say I'd be much happier if Kopitar was playing for the Canucks instead of the Kings. Well, as long as he doesn't get traded to the Rangers, I can deal with it. ;)
I'd rather him stay with the Kings ;) But Malkin is not something i am saddened by either.

If Russia has its way, Evgeni Malkin won't be a Penguin in the fall.

According to the Toronto Star, teams in Russia's pro hockey league are willing to pay Malkin $12.5 million a year tax free to come home and play.
A high-ranking executive in the Russian league told the Star a $12.5 million offer to Malkin "is not crazy," but that "it's on the edge of crazy."
But Malkin's agent, J.P. Barry, told Toronto's Globe and Mail that he has not received any offers and that Malkin is not interested in going home.
"He's been focused, since Day 1, on doing an extension with the Penguins," Barry said. "We've had discussions with them, since the end of the playoffs, on a framework and expect to have something done with the team early in July."
Whoa!

Not gonna happen

Malkin is still under contract with the Pens for another season. Both the NHL and IIHF have said that the deal would be a violation of their policies.

Besides, he looks set to stay in Pittsburgh for some time.
Malkin's agent, JP Barry, said Friday his client would follow the precedent set by Crosby last summer and sign a long-term extension at less than his presumed market value to provide the Penguins salary cap space necessary to remain a Stanley Cup contender.

"He wants to stay in Pittsburgh and keep as many of these players together and try and make a run next year," Barry said prior to the first round of the NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place.

Barry added that Malkin is optimistic the Penguins can keep Hossa, defenseman Brooks Orpik, also a potential unrestricted free agent, and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

So, Vancouver seems committed to the Nonis policy of doing jack-squat ... although the draft selections weren't bad. I'm surprised they didn't take Kyle Beach (a tough center from Everett), who went the next pick after theirs.

Even though he's a skilled, big guy Team Canada wouldn't even look at Beach for the Juniors as his attitude was questionable, to say the least? I like the Hodgson pick, this guy looks like a leader who can play and now that Trevor and Naslund are gone - not that Nazzy was a true leader - we need to grrom someone to fill that void. And the Dman we picked up would have been a first rounder apparently, but this particular draft was just so deep defensivly. There's one pick, Froshaug, that could be the steal of the draft.

What I can't believe is that we didn't get Jokinen for the bag of pucks he went for.

Canucks just picked up Kyle Wellwood off of waivers - any Toronto fans want to tell me how he dropped off the radar so quickly in Toronto? At one point he had 42 points in 48 games, and Toronto was actually looking good with him and Sundin down the middle. Then he gets injured for most of the year and then Toronto puts him on waivers. What's up with that?

Wellwood (whom I always liked, so I'm glad he went to the Canucks) was kind of an odd choice to dump, I thought, at first. Now that I think about it, though, I think Fletcher saw he might become another Nik Antropov, alternating between flashes of brilliance and utter mediocrity. Now, Antropov has managed to mature into a pretty consistent player, but that can't happen all the time, and I think that's why he got cut.

Buying out Tucker was definitely a good move, though. Now if we can only get McCabe to waive that no-trade clause and shuffle him off so that someone else can deal with him.

BARRY MELROSE HAS NO BUSINESS NEAR ANY NHL FRANCHISE!

but his mullet still has more hockey sense than 30% of the current coaches and GMs ;)

If we could only get Don Cherry back behind the bench, the circle would be complete

Free Agency starts Tuesday - who's moving and who's staying put?

You should never say that to a LA hockey fan... Either one of us! :D

I try not to pay attention... every year, the Kings make some move that leaves me scratching my head going "huh"

Darryl Katz officially took over ownership of the Edmonton Oilers today! This is the beginning of a new era in Edmonton. :D

Hated that the Wild lost Gaborik (understandable though- he was asking too much), but I'm glad to see that Andrew Burnette's back.

^ You mean Rolston? Demitra? Gaborik is still a Wild player.

As for the Canucks, well basically we're fucked if Sundin doesn't accept the offer of 2 years at 20 million. And it doesn't look like he's going to. Really, really fucked. At least we'll have a shot at Tavares....

Gillis though is looking like the worst GM ownership could have picked.

I just love it that the sharks are just sitting back watching everyone else take thier players. Campbell, Rissmiller, and probably a few more. At least they signed someone who can hit like hell but I hope they aren't done.

At least they seem to be keeping more players than the Penguins.

Leafs have continued to make some good moves, leaving me in a state of shock. ;)

We picked up Grabovski from Montreal, a good young centre with a lot of potential, and it sounds as though Fletcher is trying to court Brendan Morrison. Certainly a non-standard modus operandi for the Leafs.

Yeah, Gillis isn't looking great, but we're also seeing just how "small market" Vancouver is seen to be. We can't attract the big names even when we offer big money.

The Penguins are getting shafted pretty mightily, aren't they? We saw it with Anaheim last year: you can't keep a good team together anymore.

Actually none of the loses have been unexpected. Few people in Pittsburgh expected the Pens to keep any of the players who departed, except maybe for Hall and Ruutu.

I'm satisfied that they've been focusing on signing or extending contracts with core players such as Fleury, Malkin, and Orpik.
