Hey, I never noticed that before....

So why do most great artists study?

Nothing to suggest one couldn't learn, given enough time. Skill is skill: repeat ten thousand times and you get good, and Flint can do that ten thousand times over.

Saving the day?

His actions were the only ones that made any difference. Spock and McCoy both appeared to lack the intuition required to realize what it was all about, what the one weakness of the supervillain was, and how to proceed. Just like in pretty much every other episode of TOS!

She's the weak link. Kirk always attacks the weakest link, being a clever guy; it's just a side benefit if said link happens to be a young and pretty woman (as in pretty much every other episode of TOS!) and the tactically most expedient attack is seduction.

(We sorta know Kirk's usual type: older blondes, like Ruth and Carol. But we also see he always goes against that type in TOS, presumably because it's all business rather than pleasure.)

Why? It would appear quite a bit counterproductive to have a fembot portrayed by somebody who'd insert life and personality to the character...

Well, the main trio didn't. And they probably were feverish enough, since neither Spock nor McCoy was capable of rational action, and only Kirk was able to see the tactical picture. So we sorta learn what the disease looks like in action. Until it gets to the bubonic plague phase, that is...

Agreed on TOS needing more gore, though.

Nope
Kirk was in love - a fool in love.
He wasn't playing the big game. He was playing the fool's game and everyone nearly died (or got put into suspended animation) because of it.

Naah. Watch the line "We are fighting over a woman!" and tell me Kirk is being serious. :guffaw:

He's pulling Flint's leg, is all. By fondling those of his fake daughter-lover, whom he utterly forgets before the epilogue rolls.

It is a catchy tune.

Moving on to something I only just noticed yesterday. Since the remaster 15 years ago, I have been paying more attention to the recurring non-dialogue extras. On a whim, I put on "Balance of Terror" for a rewatch. In the teaser, at the Martine-Tomlinson wedding, I finally noticed that Frank DaVinci was wearing a gold shirt. After the opening credits, he was back on the bridge wearing his customary blue shirt. A few minutes later, when Spock gives his historical briefing to the crew over the intercom, the gold shirted version of DaVinci is one of the crewmen listening in the corridor.

Re-watching TMP recently I was struck by how many lens flares there are.

FF to 1:40.

Yeah it's not particularly logical. Kirk suggests contraception and Hodin says its "against their very nature". Yet somehow this great reverence for life will allow people to volunteer to contract a fatal disease.
Sadly, there are lots of real life examples.

They argue via TelepathyBBS. Their debates about which way the bridge faces are headache-inducing.
LOL!

I'm re-watching The Man Trap for the first time in who-knows-how-long. Damn. It's so good! A few things I've noticed:
  • I know this wasn't the first post-Cage ep filmed, but the world already feels lived in. Kirk teases McCoy when they first beam down and apologizes after he snaps at him - very believably friends. Uhura is teasing and flirting with Spock, even putting her hand on his arm (he seems to find his collar a bit tight there!). Even when she gets mad at him, there's a familiarity. Janice and Sulu seem to be friends/friendly. She even handles the catcalling jerks like she's used to it.
  • The first redshirt to die is wearing blue!
  • It's not sickbay yet, it's the dispensary.
  • The ruins on the planet look vaguely Aztec.
  • I think Uhura has more to do & say here than in the rest of the eps combined!
  • The actor playing Green did a great job lusting after that salt shaker.
  • I had completely forgotten about the plant Janice likes!
Charlie X next!
